Hanny Tchelley: livre-témoignage « Et si c’etait à refaire ? Confidences sur un parcours de vie » - Book (And if it was to be redone? Reflections on a life’s journey)

Hanny Tchelley: livre-témoignage « Et si c’etait à refaire ? Confidences sur un parcours de vie » (And if it was to be redone? Reflections on a life’s journey)

"Since I was involved in the Ivorian crisis, at first it was really to externalize my pain, so as not to go under. Writing prevented me from dying, my whole family remained in Côte d’Ivoire, including my mother to whom I was very attached. I never wanted to live outside, I am a film professional, I studied abroad but I always wanted to live in Côte d'Ivoire. So I was not prepared to face the world outside, at least not under these conditions. I was able to return as a result of the national reconciliation." (Translation from French africa24tv.com)

In her recently released book, Et si c’etait à refaire ? Confidences sur un parcours de vie (Translation: And if it was to be redone? Reflections on a life’s journey), Hanny Tchelley confides the personal and political peregrinations, choices, in her life as artist, activist, citizen.

Book description

Et si c’etait à refaire ? Confidences sur un parcours de vie is the strong and uncompromising story of an existence that could have been a fairy tale if it had not been eclipsed by the larger History that comes to unsettle lives and tear people apart. The Ivorian author describes her forced exile in Europe under the pressure of civil war, foreign interference, and the impossibility of staying in Africa without putting her life and loved ones in danger. Between violence, fear and betrayal, moments of grace emerge with the evocation of a beloved and respected mother, of a sincere patriotic commitment. A stronger message emerges even in the manner in which human values and engagement in an artistic profession,—the cinema, assist in offsetting a whirlwind of unjust and revolting events. (Translation from French)

Actress-activist-producer Hanny Tchelley, who founded the International Festival of Short Films of Abdijan (FICA), also produced the 2002 series, Vies de Femmes. The 26-minute series of six episodes traces the experiences of six prominent African women in West Africa.

Description du livre

Salimata, a Senegalese woman studying in Morocco, decides to return to her country to see her mother who is in critical condition. What does this perilous journey, upon which she embarks with little means, have in store for her?

Passionate about cinema and digital technology since her childhood, Isabelle Kouraogo, from Côte d'Ivoire, pursued directing. After starting her career in television, and wanting to devote herself to cinema, she studied at the École Supérieure des Arts Visuels de Marrakech (ESAV).

This is perhaps what inspired her film Le Retour, where we find a young Senegalese woman who hitchhikes from Morocco to cross the Mauritanian border to be with her mother who is ill. During this return to her country, a journey upon which she embarks with no financial resources, she confronts the fear of unknown drivers, starting with Rachid who gives her a ride in his van, initiates a conversation and begins to make ambiguous proposals. On a winding and deserted road, a sort of rodeo of feelings, both wary and sad, emerge within Salimata.

She has courage and determination. But between the skeleton pendant which hangs in the truck and the revolver spotted in the glove compartment, there is a feeling of death that threatens her. Isabelle Kouraogo draws on the codes of both the western and Hitchcockian suspense to orchestrate the confrontation between the two protagonists, who for the most part remain in the closed environment of the driver's cabin, up until a tense altercation. It is then that a decisive reversal occurs which makes Le Retour a rite of passage tale right to the end, which is also very western.

Tense, poignant, fascinating and very sober, the film keeps us in suspense, providing us with a subtle reversal that highlights the contribution of Black cultures in a society that is losing its moral values.

Women in Cinema, Visual Media and Screen Culture of Côte d'Ivoire

Women in Cinema, Visual Media and Screen Culture of Côte d'Ivoire

Cinema is a vehicle for unity and social cohesion--Naky Sy Savane

Martine Ndah directed her graduation film Tresse à la douzaine in 1988, at the Parisian film school Varan, the first film by a woman Ivoirian director. After a pause, in the late 1990s, productions from the Ivoirian diaspora were also part of the Ivorian cinema culture, notably with the works of French-based filmmaker Isabelle Boni-Claverie. The popular cult series “Ma Famille” (2002), renamed “Ma Grande Famille” (2007) when re-launched, was conceived and directed by actress turned filmmaker Akissi Delta, whose long career on the screen of Ivoirian cinema added to the public appeal of her production. Inspired by the story behind her success, Ivoirian Siam Marley presents a portrait of her role model in her film Couvre Feu (2016).

For Naky Sy Savane being an actress is also being a feminist activist in the context of cinema as a form of engagement. In 2005, she created the Afriki Djigui Theatri to promote African culture in Côte d’Ivoire. In addition, she helms the Ivorian-based FESTILAG, the Festival international du film des lacs et des lagunes (International Lakes and Lagoons Film Festival). At its 2019 edition she brought together actresses throughout the continent for the historic general assembly of African actresses. During the festival event tributes were made to the pioneering actresses of African cinema.

Actress-activist-producer Hanny Tchelley, who founded the International Festival of Short Films of Abdijan, also produced the 2002 series, Vies de Femmes. The 26-minute series of six episodes traces the experiences of six prominent African women in West Africa. Sita Houelefohoua Silue's short film about energy and the challenges that rural societies face, further highlights the role that African women take on as activist-cultural producers. Moreover, Marie-Christine Amon and Alexandra Amon had this to say about their series Chroniques Africaines: Chroniques africaines: "With two women at the helm of Chroniques africaines [producer Alexandra Amon and director Marie-Christine Amon], we hope one day to have the privilege of being among the women who have marked the audiovisual industry in Africa...".

Marguerite Abouet’s acclaimed graphic animation film Aya of Yopou City (2013), highlights the broad spectrum of the genres that Ivoirian women image-makers have embraced and offer to their spectators.

Akre Loba Diby Melyou puts a spotlight on the ubiquity of digital technology and its impact on societies across the globe and in Africa in particular. Her series, simply titled "Blog", reflects the growing relevance of social media in Africa and its importance to Ivorian women of the screen.

The African Women in Cinema Blog endeavors to present the myriad screen experiences of Côte d'Ivoire. While not claiming by any means to be exhaustive, the Blog presents a small selection of voices that are indicative of the diverse and wide-ranging screen cultures of Côte d'Ivoire.

NG'ENDO MUKII: YELLOW FEVER
Filmmaker’s note of intention:

I am interested in the concept of skin and race, and what they imply; in the ideas and theories sown into our flesh that change with the arc of time. The idea of beauty has become globalised, creating homogenous aspirations, and distorting people’s self-image across the planet. In my film, I focus on African women’s self-image, through memories and interviews; using mixed media to describe this almost schizophrenic self-visualization that I and many others have grown up with.

MARGUERITE ABOUET & CLEMENT OUBRERIE : AYA OF YOPOU CITY | AYA DE
YOPOUGON

[English]

Aya of Yopou City recounts the life of Aya, a beautiful 19-year-old Ivorian who lives in Yopougon, a working-class neighbourhood of Abidjan in the 1970s.

A serious young woman who has ambitions to become a doctor, she is in total contrast to her two friends, Adjoua and Bintou who to her dismay, do extremely well in the categories : Hairstyles, Fashion and Husband hunting. The two girls, go dancing in the "bush", venture out to the dance halls, taking life easily, until the day that Adjoua, who is not married, finds out that she is pregnant.

In a serene atmosphere with warm colours seasoned with popular songs, the film attempts to describe the lives of an urban and modern neighbourhood where no matter the circumstances, everyone stays optimistic by relying on the solidarity among neighbours.
