Created and written by Anna Gomis, herself of Manjak origin, Manjak features Jella, a young Dakar woman, who believes she is en route to Guinea-Bissau, in the heart of the Manjak forests, for a traditional ceremony. While there, she realizes that this is actually the funeral of her father Formosa, whom she had not seen for 25 years. Her encounter with her father's village, Ba Yeuk, leads her to the discovery of the mysteries linked to her Manjak family.
 
Manjak thus retraces Jella's mystical journey and her quest for identity, magnificently directed by two talents: Senegalese filmmaker Hubert Laba Ndao, who made the award-winning films Teuss Teuss and Dakar Trottoirs, and the Ivorian director Siam Marley, spotted by CANAL + through the L’Afrique au féminin program.

 

Créée et écrite par Anna Gomis, elle-même d’origine Manjak, Manjak met en scène Jella, une jeune Dakaroise, qui croit se rendre en Guinée-Bissau, en plein cœur des forêts Manjak pour une cérémonie traditionnelle. Sur place, elle se rend compte qu’il s’agit en réalité des funérailles de son père Formose qu’elle n’avait pas vu depuis 25 ans. Sa rencontre avec Ba Yeuk, son village paternel, la conduit à la découverte des mystères liés à sa famille Manjak.

 

Manjak retrace ainsi le voyage mystique de Jella et de sa quête d’identité, magnifiquement réalisé par deux talents : Hubert Laba Ndao, réalisateur sénégalais à qui l’on doit des films primés tels que Teuss Teuss et Dakar Trottoirs, et Siam Marley, jeune réalisatrice ivoirienne repérée par CANAL+ à travers L’Afrique au féminin.
