Egypt - Documentary - 65min - 2021

"As a woman living in Cairo I live with a lot of fear and anxiety. I find that Cairo is a tough city especially for women who choose any choice other than the traditional. On a daily basis, women who look a bit different are confronted with many challenges. The violence towards women, the aggression on the street and the constant judgment is part of the daily exposure that women have to deal with. Traumas that they experience personally or that they are exposed to when they engage with the life of other women. How do we still continue to pursue our dreams and face our fears? I saw in both Aya and Heba a free spirit and attempted to deal with this challenge. They suffer like me from constant fear, anxiety and discomfort of living in this city but they still continue to stick with their choices. They both find in Art a refugee and in helping others and connecting with other women a healing. In following them, I found that they had many answers to my question. Their choices inspired me. They show in a simple way how friendship, solidarity, art, sports, accepting oneself and pursuing your passions is possible in this tough city. They allowed me into their life and helped me share through this film my complex relationship as a woman with my city Cairo. I hope by sharing this experience I would in return shine a positivity to all women who watch this film." Hala Galal Director's Statement

Description

In the streets of Cairo, documentary filmmaker Hala Galal moves purposefully and quickly. She presents a brave face, but she is in constant fear of being harassed (or worse) just for being a working single woman. Galal follows two women, Heba and Aya, who challenge the norms and limitations of women in Egypt with a completely different fearlessness. Heba tries to find space in her life as a single mother and photojournalist to create art that, among other things, focuses on the existence of the female body. Although money is tight, her small home is always filled with laughter and the smell of home-cooked food. Meanwhile, Aya tries to find a foothold in her relationship with family, religion and passion for film. The contact sport of roller derby takes up more and more of her time, and the community and closeness to the other women on the team forces Aya to reconsider her position as a woman. All three women have a desire to create space for more voices and nuanced perspectives in Egypt. They live alone and work in art specifically, through which they find their way, achieve their dreams and find some happiness—regardless of the consequences. (Source: YouTube)

Fatima Ali Boubakdy: Annatto - Selection Officielle - Perspectives - FESPACO 2023

Fatima Ali Boubakdy
Annatto
Selection Officielle - Perspectives
FESPACO 2023

Morocco - Fiction - 103min - 2022

“Anne is a French proper name, Natou, a feminine name that is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. I merged the two names, resulting in Annatto, which is the name of the film's protagonist. Her name reflects her Franco-Senegalese roots.”

“Annatto” highlights the richness, synergy and interculturality represented by ethnic mixing. By pointing out intolerance and racism, the film also advocates the importance of favoring human values. It is a film that seeks to concretize a vision and a principle in which we strongly believe and which consists in capitalizing on the links with a continent to which we belong and which forms a large part of our identity. It is our duty, as creators, to highlight this point and others related to our Africanness.

Gardien des mondes | Guardian of the Worlds
Selection officielle - FESPACO 2023

France - Documentary - 90mins - 2021

Synopsis
Hassan recalls the first night that Jellaz became his place of shelter. After burying his parents and two brothers, he rested his head at the foot of their graves, fell into a deep sleep, and felt his soul fly. Forty years later, Hassan is the guardian of Jellaz, stationed at the crossroads of two worlds. During the day, we follow Hassan as he greets both the dead and living as well as maintains the space as required - he gardens, builds, cleans, and helps with burial ceremonies. Sometimes he visits crowded neighborhood cafés and blends into life among the living. The injustices and misery that he witnesses outside of Jellaz intrude upon the joy and hope that he feels every day in his enchanted workspace, home, and eventually, deathbed. And then there is Sabrine. She knows what it is like to live a rough and precarious life, and she too is looking for an earthly companion. As Hassan prepares for his own life after death, he shares with us his notes on mercy, memory, and love.

(Source: https://www.film-documentaire.fr/4DACTION/w_fiche_film/65741)

Chloé Aïcha Boro: Al Djanat | Paradis originel - Selection officielle - FESPACO 2023

Chloé Aïcha Boro
Al Djanat | Paradis original

Burkina Faso - 90min - Documentary - 2022

Synopsis
A large religious family torn apart by a real estate property dispute leads to a deep questioning of transmission, identity and justice.

Djanat" (meaning original paradise) recounts the crisis that happened in the family courtyard of the director, Chloé Aïcha Boro, in Dédougou in Burkina Faso. The death of her uncle, the patriarch, religious authority of the region and guarantor of the transmission of dogmatic Mandinka Islam, led to a legal inheritance procedure before the Western-inspired courts, thus breaking with an age-old tradition of oral transmission. This family is not an isolated case in embroiled in a land-related conflict. If one is to believe the media which has taken on the subject, such as Radio Balafon, starting from the example of the court of Chloé Aïcha Boro's family, it is a "social bomb" in the making in West African societies. In Bobo Dioulasso, the courthouse was burnt down in an outpouring of popular opposition to modern Western-inspired justice.
The courtyard becomes the theater where the future of a family, emblematic of an entire society, is played out. Gradually, there is a war of words and points of view clash right up until the trial. In this pivotal period, where Western modernism transforms identities right down to family ties, and traditional social structures and religious codes: how does one go from being guardians of the land to owners of real estate? How is a relationship with one’s heritage maintained?

Bio
Chloé-Aïcha Boro is a Franco-Burkinabe writer and filmmaker. After studying modern literature, she worked as a journalist in Burkina Faso for several magazines and newspapers (La Voix du Sahel, Le Marabout) then as assistant director and program presenter at TV Koodo and Radio Gambidi. In 2017 for her feature film France-aurevoir, le nouveau commerce triangulaire (France-goodbye, the new triangular trade) she received the Best Documentary Film Award at the Vues d'Afrique Festival in Montreal. In 2019 Le loup d’or de baolé was screened at FIPADOC in Biarritz, later awarded the Etalon de Yennenga (Golden Stallion) for Documentary at FESPACO, the highest distinction for an African documentary.

Katy Lena N'Diaye: L’argent, la liberté, Une Histoire du Franc CFA | Money, Freedom, A Story of the CFA franc - Selection Officielle FESPACO 2023

Katy Lena N'Diaye
L’argent, la liberté, Une Histoire du Franc CFA
Money, Freedom, A Story of the CFA franc

Documentaire - 102 min - Senegal - 2022

The former French colonies in Central and West Africa have been independent since 1960, but most of these countries still use the currency of the former oppressor: the CFA franc. It was linked to the French franc when it was introduced, so the national bank in Paris controlled monetary policy. Now the currency has a fixed exchange rate with the euro. The link with the European currency strongly influences the monetary policy of CFA countries. And that means the value of the CFA franc is defined by political decisions taken elsewhere, rather than by the domestic economy.

The film explores the history of this monetary colonization through interviews with key players and direct witnesses of the history of the CFA franc, supplemented by extensive archive material. This is alternated with dreamy shots of landscapes and historical objects, accompanied by the filmmaker, in voice-over, reflecting on the symbolism of monetary sovereignty. Since 2017, discussion of the French CFA has again been revived, thanks to a new generation that’s eager to move into the next phase of decolonization and emancipation.

(Source: https://www.film-documentaire.fr/4DACTION/w_fiche_film/3281_0)
