Description
African Moot follows teams from Uganda, Kenya, Egypt and South Africa as they prepare for the annual competition happening in Gaborone, Botswana. This year's case is centred on the rights of refugees on the continent and each student has to grapple with burning issues around migration facing their own countries.

Every year over a hundred law students from across Africa gather for the prestigious African Human Rights Moot Competition. This year, the rights of refugees on the continent will be debated in a simulated court hearing at the African Court of Human Rights. The next generation of the legal elite in Africa shows what it is capable of.

Shameela Seedat is a human rights law specialist turned filmmaker from South Africa. Since she began documentary filmmaking, Seedat has been commissioned by various local and international television stations. “Whispering Truth to Power” released in 2018, was her feature-length debut.

Whispering Truth to Power” tells the dramatic story of Thuli Madonsela, South Africa’s first female Public Protector. It’s an official position similar to an Ombud. Madonsela fought against corruption amongst the country’s most powerful politicians at great personal cost.

The film is part portrait; we see her as a boss, mother, and public hero. It also plays out as a gripping political drama — Madonsela ends her last year in office with a dramatic final battle against the country’s President, who has been accused of colluding with a wealthy family to “capture the state.”

Synopsis

In one of the most economically divided countries in the world, Thuli Madonsela, at great personal cost, overcomes huge barriers to create an institution capable of fighting injustice even at the highest level. In her last year in office, South Africa's courageous yet controversial public protector faces down corruption, state power abuses and the president himself, intent on bringing justice to a country still wrestling with its apartheid past. Biography | Biographie

Shameela Seedat is a human-rights law specialist and filmmaker from South Africa. She worked at the constitutional court of South Africa, the UNDP/ UNIFEM in New York, the democracy research institute Idasa, and at a law firm. She has published widely on human rights and democratic accountability. Whispering Truth to Power, which tracks South Africa’s first female public protector, Thuli Madonsela, is her first feature length documentary. Shameela Seedat étudie le droit, les sciences politiques et les droits de l'homme à Cape Town et à New York. Ce qui l'amène à travailler dans le droit public en tant que chercheuse pour la Cour Constitutionnelle d'Afrique du Sud, mais aussi comme experte juridique pour l'UNIFEM (Fonds de développement des Nations Unis pour la femme) et analyste politique à l'Idasa (Institut pour la démocratie en Afrique du Sud).
