Crowdfunding : Pandora Hodge - Kriterion Monrovia - Founder of Liberia’s First Art-House Cinema | Fondatrice du premier cinéma d’art et d’essai au Liberia

Crowdfunding : Pandora Hodge - Kriterion Monrovia - Founder of Liberia’s First Art-House Cinema | Fondatrice du premier cinéma d’art et d’essai au Liberia

http://www.kriterionmonrovia.org/whats-news NO LONGER ACTIVE

Pandora Hodge, the founder of Kriterion Monrovia, an NGO based in the Liberian capital Monrovia, aims to create the country’s first art-house cinema.

After suffering from two civil wars where much historical and cultural knowledge were lost, Liberia struggled to develop a vibrant film culture. After 14 years of conflict, in 2003 the country began the slow process of rebuilding and recovering. Amid this process though, the Ebola virus epidemic violently erupted within the region and severely hit Liberia. The war-torn country totalled around 4,300 deaths due to the outbreak. During this time, members of the Liberian film community stopped movie screenings and went door-to-door to help raise awareness for the virus. (Source: Wikipedia)

At the present Pandora Hodge with her team of students, and the many enthusiastic volunteers, use various venues throughout the local community for film screenings. Hence it is through cinema that Pandora Hodge hopes to bring culture back to the country after the devastation of civil war.

The initiative is based on the post-World War II project Kriterion Amsterdam, whose goal was to revitalise the cultural landscape in the Netherlands. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise money to make Kriterion Monrovia become a reality:

The young people of Kriterion Monrovia believe in youth entrepreneurship and culture as powerful tools for positive change. They dream of opening their own independent cinema, which will be run entirely by young Liberians. Through the cinema, they will be able to create a better future for themselves, their generation and their country.

UPDATE 7 AUGUST 2018:

The new arthouse cinema will be an independent cultural venue and hub for creativity, arts and innovation in the form of a social enterprise run entirely by Liberian university students. The European Union Delegation to Liberia chose to partner with a local student organisation Kriterion Monrovia to bring to life the dream of many young people in Liberia of having a space available where the creativity of young Liberians could be encouraged to generate new cultural and artistic products through various forms including film making, visual arts, photography and much more. The Foxy Five Web Series - Created and Directed by Jabu Nadia Newman (South Africa)

The Foxy Five Web Series
Created and Directed by Jabu Nadia Newman (South Africa)

Humour, black power feminism, badass empowerment, in-your-face sexualities politics are all components of the Foxy Five six-episode webseries: Unity Bond, Womxn We, Blaq Beauty, Femme Fatale, and Prolly Plebs and the Finale. There are definitely the influences of black women power flics of the 1970s USA, such as Foxy Brown, perhaps, inspiration of the title, and more particularly the actress, Pam Grier.

Moreover, there are South African cultural experiences, influences with Black South African women sheroes that inform the series, notably, within the South African Black Power Movement.

The “sister-friends genre” which focuses on a cohort of women uniting under a variety of themes seems to play a role in the construction of the series. Womxn We, Blaq Beauty, Unity Bond, Femme Fatale, and Prolly Plebs, all characters of the series, have particular roles. The actors are each very distinctive, with noteworthy talent. South Africa has diverse ethnicities which gives a rich variety of physical and cultural specificities, aspects that are very apparent in the series.

Description
This web series follows the adventures of the white- supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy smashing group of 5 young womxn from Cape Town –The Foxy Five. Each womxn represents a different struggle and set of ideals within feminism. Despite their ideological differences and the clashes they often cause, the womxn are a tight-nit sisterhood that always manage to band together in overcoming The Man.  (Source: YouTube)

The Foxy Five is a webseries that deals with issues of intersectional feminism and follows the lives of five womxn who are finding themselves in the young democracy that is South Africa, Cape Town.

The creator, writer and director Jabu Nadia Newman was particularly inspired during the #FeesMustFall protests and wanted to put all the new concepts and ideas that she was exposed to into a fictional webseries. (Source: Indiegogo)

For a long time I wanted to make a film about African women, but I didn't know how to approach it. During a séjour to Senegal for my father's funeral, I was surprised by the dichotomy between what women say in public and the reality of their private life, and also by the fantasies that I had about their life there. I entered in my cousins’ gynoecium. They are who I would have been if my parents had not expatriated to France. I lived in France, and had not been to Senegal but three times, nor do I speak Wolof. So I looked at these women in the place that would have been mine. With a distance, an exteriority, and I hope, with no ethnocentrisms. Clap Noir interview by Caroline Pochon

This film is the portrait of a courtyard and the women who live in it, three urban Senegalese women. A mother, Néné and her two daughters, Mouille and Mame Sarr. This courtyard is a bit of a metaphor for a gynoecium in Senegal: a cloistered space, exclusively inhabited by women, where confronted with the adversity of daily life, some struggle while attempting to resist, while others wait, as they “laze about” and dream of leaving. In the courtyard there are no men, but many children, a steady flow of comings and goings, a vast chaos commanded by these women who on their own make sure that everything holds together. This courtyard is my mother's courtyard, the courtyard of her childhood. In this courtyard, I could have been born.

In a way, I film what my life could have been, I realize that it was not by much that I was born on the "good side". From here, I measure what exile transforms, everything that is lost by leaving, everything that is gained from it. Source: film-documentaire.fr

A screening of the film "Les Sénégalaises et la Sénégauloise" by Alice Diop followed by a debate on the vulnerability of Senegalese girls and women in the face of all forms of sexual abuse, with Françoise Laurant, Pilar De Bernardy and a representative of the Senegalese diaspora.

***

This issue of Africana Studia presents articles that were part of the International Colloquium "Women’s Struggles in the Cinemas of Africa and the Middle East" organised by the Centre for African Studies of the University of Porto, which took place from 12-13 May 2016 at FLUP. The publication addresses the cinemas of Africa and the Middle East as regions still underdeveloped in the field of research, and reflects two key points of the colloquy: the effects of the destructive legacy of colonialism on film production, which is still little known, and the female presence behind an art that has a profound influence on societies.
