Franco-Tunisian cineaste Nadia El Fani, received the prestigious award for the best documentary film at Fespaco for the film "No Harm Done" co-directed with Alina Isabel Pérez. In front of a packed stadium she stated : "I want to thank Fespaco for selecting the film while in my own country, the JCC [Film Festival of Carthage] did not give me this honour. So this award is a gift to the Tunisia of luminaries and to its youth who dance in the street and continue to resist, despite the repression of the Islamists!..."
The film of Nadia El Fani and Alina Isabel Pérez has still not been able to be presented to a Tunisian audience. And the filmmaker cannot yet return home.
The day before, Nadia El Fani was awarded the Women's Foundation for Africa Award. She encouraged the young audience won over by the film, "No Harm Done", to act : "Cinema is a weapon! Use it to fight against the obscurantists who are attempting to push Africa backward!" A regular at the film festival in Ouagadougou, the cineaste notices with much regret, the tablighi and salafist groups settling in the capital.

1969-2013 ! For 44 years now FESPACO has been at the service of African cinema! Thus, over the decades FESPACO has taken on the challenge of making the continent's 7th art visible. This showcase remains alive for this grand festival which pays tribute to me as Guest of Honour.
What a wonderful gesture on the part of FESPACO, which through the medium of cinema has integrated African culture on a global scale. As a means of expression par excellence, images of Africa have been transported to the most unexpected places in the world. And the vast field of our imagination continues to expand, showing the full extent of coming together in our differences.
As a pioneer of FESPACO, and the first woman as Guest of Honour, I would like to encourage and thank all the women professionals of Africa and the Diaspora. For us, women of the image, this 23rd edition truly marks our successful integration into the world of cinema. FESPACO dared to believe in us, entrusting with us the presidency of all the official juries. It is a well-deserved tribute.
The theme of the 23rd edition, "African Cinema and Public Policy in Africa", challenges all of us, but especially African governments, to recognise cin'ema in the public interest. It is also a call to our partners, both technical and financial (TPF) who have always supported our cinema. I have hopes for the renaissance of African cinema in the 21st century.
Finally, on behalf of all the pioneers of FESPACO, I would like to thank you for the honour that has been bestowed on my humble person, and reassure you that we will continue to work towards the development and magnificence of our festival.
Have an enjoyable festival!
Long live FESPACO
Thank you
