Amina Abdoulaye Mamani: L’envoyée de Dieu | The Envoy of God - Selection officielle FESPACO 2023

Amina Abdoulaye Mamani

L’envoyée de Dieu | The Envoy of God

Selection officielle FESPACO 2023

Niger - 26mins - Fiction

Amina Abdoulaye Mamani:

The film talks about jihadism - terrorism, as it relates to the issues of security that we have experienced for the past several years in the Sahel (Mali, Niger, Chad & Burkina Faso). However the film is explored from another perspective: not a diehard jihadism with killing and blood. « L’envoyée de Dieu » (The Messenger of God) is the story of a little girl who was kidnapped and chosen at random one night, an explosive belt attached to her body, programmed to explode in 10 minutes. She is told that she is going to accomplish a divine mission. She is then deposited in a market to kill the "enemies" of Allah.

Synopsis

“Small bits of fabric, stained with blood, are scattered about on the ground. These are the remains of an explosion, which took the lives of several people. When this happens, the survivors ask themselves: why”?

Fadjimata, in a village market, with an explosive programmed in 10 minutes, to kill the enemies of God. This is her native village. The film is an inner journey during which she passes from the present to the past through different portraits: the manager of the market where there is a seesaw, a child who calls her mother, her maternal home devastated, a neighbor who still lives there, young girls who play.

For 9 minutes and 40 seconds Fadjimata revisits the evidence.

Her school, which reminds her of the dream she had... awakening in her, her instinct for survival;  other possibilities take shape. The people she meets make her want to ask for help, to go to the police station to have the explosive removed.

Within 20 seconds, she finds herself with her mother. A difficult time for both of them. She reaches the present, which floats through time like a leaf that peels off a branch, and falls inexorably to the ground...

Synopsis

(Source: Ouiprod.org)

In her quest to piece together a past of a father she barely knew and reclaim his place in Niger’s official history, the director of this personal documentary candidly poses the question: “Who still remembers Abdoulaye Mamani?” A 10 year filmmaking process involving in-depth research and interviews reveals that while Mamani is perhaps best known for his literary contributions as a poet and novelist, he was also a righteous trade union organizer, journalist, and dynamic politician with a lifelong commitment to the freedom and independence of his country.
