The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a grant making foundation that supports local, national and regional organizations working towards the empowerment of African women and the achievement of gender equality on the continent.  The vision of AWDF is for women to live in a world where there is social justice, equality and respect for women’s human rights. To this end, our mission is to mobilize and disburse financial, human and material resources to support positive transformation in Africa. We believe that If women are empowered with skills, information, sustainable livelihoods, opportunities to fulfil their potential, plus the capacity and space to make transformative choices, then we will have vibrant, healthy and inclusive communities.

To achieve its vision and mission, the African Women’s Development Fund provides grant and technical support to women’s groups and organizations in Africa working on issues in line with the following themes:

Women’s Human Rights (WHR)
Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods (EEL)
Health and Reproductive Rights (HRR)
Governance Peace and Security (GPS)
Arts, Culture and Sports (ACS)

Le Fonds de Développement pour la Femme Africaine (AWDF) est une fondation africaine d’octroi de subvention ; elle finance les organisations locales, nationales, sous-régionales et régionales en Afrique qui oeuvrent en vue de l’émancipation de la femme. The commemoration of the International Day of the Widow, 23 June, provides the opportunity to highlight the numerous difficulties that women endure at the death of their husbands. Plunged into a state of mourning, widows sometimes find themselves without the protection of a social net for the first time since their marriage. Too often they are deprived of their inheritance, property rights, access to employment and even the means to ensure their survival.

La célébration de Journée internationale des veuves, le 23 juin, offre l’occasion d’attirer l’attention sur les nombreuses difficultés que connaissent les femmes lorsque leur mari meurt.  Plongées dans le chagrin, les veuves se retrouvent parfois sans filet de protection sociale pour la première fois depuis leur mariage.  Trop souvent, elles sont privées du droit d’hériter, de droits fonciers, de l’accès à l’emploi et même des moyens d’assurer leur survie.

When asked what was the underlying motivation that led her to make such a work, Mary-Noël Niba responded: I want to be the voice of the voiceless. This is the feeling that drove me when I decided to make this documentary; to discover the basis of the tradition of succession among the Koms and their impact on society. Based on a woman's story, I wanted to put under the spotlight, the courage of some of the victims of a form of enslavement of women in the name of tradition; to highlight the women who decided to rebel despite the threats, and to raise their heads as they face the magnitude of the phenomenon


A la question de savoir quelles sont les motivations profondes qui ont poussé l’auteure à réaliser une telle œuvre, Mary-Noël NIBA déclare : Je voudrais être la voix des sans voix. C’est le sentiment qui m’anime lorsque je me décide à faire ce documentaire qui a pour but de faire découvrir les fondements de la tradition de succession chez les Koms et leurs conséquences sur la société. A travers l’histoire d’une femme, je voudrais mettre sous les feux des projecteurs, le courage de quelques victimes d’une forme d’asservissement de la femme au nom de la tradition, des femmes qui ont décidé de se révolter malgré les menaces, de lever la tête devant l’ampleur du phénomène.

African Women Make Soccer Movies

During this time of worldwide excitement around the 2014 World Cup hosted by Brazil, the African Women in Cinema Blog highlights the filmmaking experiences of African women who focus their cameras, from diverse perspectives, on soccer.

Monique Mbeka Phoba who co-directed with Guy Kabeya Muya, Between the Cup and the Election (2008), followed the members of the 1974 Leopards, the first team from sub-Saharan Africa to qualify for the World Cup. Ngardy Conteh with Allan Tong are in the development stages of the film Leone Stars about an amputee soccer team in Sierra Leone, comprised of child survivors of the civil war. Florence Ayisi’s 2005 documentary Zanzibar Soccer Queens follows this team of talented and determine women, especially as it relates to sport and women’s bodies in a majority Muslim population. 


In addition, the Ladies’ Turn association, which works with young Senegalese girls and women to develop leadership and teamwork skills through soccer, was featured in the 2012 film of the same name by Helene Harder.

Between The Cup and The Election

Inspired by the 2006 elections in Congo, a group of film students sets out to make a film. They track down members of the 1974 Leopards, Zaire's national soccer squad, the first team from sub-Saharan Africa to qualify for the World Cup. After a dismal first round performance -- the Leopards were outscored 14-0 in three games -- the players returned home in disgrace and drifted into obscurity. The team's captain, however, has fared better and is running for political office in Kinshasa. Deftly weaving past and present, Between the Cup and the Election offers a personal and endearing study of the intersection between sport and politics.

Documentary in development about an amputee soccer team in Sierra Leone, child survivors of the civil war

Feature length documentary (in development) about amputee soccer in Sierra Leone and national team's journey to the World Amputee Football Championships in 2012.

They were outcasts ever since they were boys when rebel soldiers hacked off their arms and legs in Sierra Leone's civil war. With no families, no jobs and no homes, these young men grew up with nothing until they discovered the healing powers of the Beautiful Game.

Soccer gives them something to fight for. Soccer makes them heroes to their countrymen. Soccer turns them from victims to champions. However, victory isn’t about winning the game, but about restoring dignity and hope in the bleakest of situations

Using the Ladies’ Turn tournament as a starting point and following the people who invest their talent and their convictions in its success, the film seeks to expose both a Senegalese and international public to the determination of the players despite the difficulties and prejudices that they face. In Senegal as in many other countries, soccer is considered a sport for men, not women.  With the help of the Ladies’ Turn team, Senegalese girls fight to follow their passion for playing soccer all the way from small, neighborhood fields to the tournament finals in Dakar’s newest stadium.  They win a new visibility that may be a reflection of the role that women are increasingly forging in Senegalese society. By following the tournament’s matches and stories, the film plunges the spectator into a human adventure that will bring out the force, the contradictions, and the beauty of a Senegal open to the world and in constant evolution.

Women’s Panorama Soko, Entertainment and Women Empowerment Programme




ZIFF has used the platform of the Women’s Panorama to highlight and address pertinent gender, – health and social issues. The Panorama therefore becomes a medium of Women’s Power and Visibility. The Women’s Panorama commonly comprises of a series of workshops, seminars and symposia organized and centred on the visibility of women in and through the medium of cinema, the arts and the media.

Greater effort is made to attain social relevance in this year’s WP program. Interventions intended to bring about noticeable changes in women’s lives by addressing through and mainstreaming the topic Gender Based Violence and empowering women to act through attending the opening Parade, the women entrepreneurship workshop, sell their products at the ‘soko ya filamu’ – the market in from t of the House of Wonders – and participate in the talks on Gender Based Violence at the Reclaim Women Center just behind the House of Wonders.

The festival will open with a big opening parade 14 June with music and entertainment a great opportunity to – unite against gender based violence- . Women organisations and other supporters will be mobilised to join the parade and with banners and signs the participants can voice their ideas and advocate to open the discussion on this important topic. The parade will start at Ben Bela School at 15.30pm and will end at the Old Fort.

Dhow race: Will take place on Sunday 15 June and about 10 Zanzibarian companies will race against each other in front of the new construction next to the Serena Hotel. The winners will receive a price and the honour of being the fastest dhow in 2014.

The women panorama at the House of Wonders will host the women vendors who will be selling their handicrafts and goods and will also host several local women groups who will be selling their own local produced products. This is a great opportunity for the women to be exposed to international customers and to learn how more experienced vendors, package and sell their products.

The daily entertainment will encompass music, drama shows, fashion show and a Women Chill Out Corner with Zanzibarian refreshments. The awareness raising on Gender Based Violence will be done through Women Talks; on what GBV is, what you can do if you are a victim of GBV; if your witness GBV in your community and women who talk about their own life experiences.

The entrepreneurship workshop will be held in a separate venue. The participants are the women of local women groups who are invited to sell at the market and have been part of the Village Panorama. The objective of the workshop is to enable the participants to discover their entrepreneurial potential and talents and to empower them through information on financing possibilities, learning from and with each other and through participatory sessions.

Kenyan-Mexican Lupita Nyong'o, producer, director and actor brings to the screen the acclaimed novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie of Nigeria. This production is a reflection of the evolving tendencies in transnational African cinemas and the emergence of African global diasporan storytelling and cultural production by women.

Lupita Nyong’o: It is such an honor to have the opportunity to bring Ms. Adichie’s brilliant book to the screen. Page after page I was struck by Ifemelu and Obinze’s stories, whose experiences as African immigrants are so specific and also so imminently relatable. It is a thrilling challenge to tell a truly international story so full of love, humor and heart.

Lupita Nyong'o's first work as director and producer In My Genes, is a documentary about the experiences of people with albinism in Kenya. Made in 2007, the film was her thesis project at Hampshire College in the USA where she received a B.A. in film.

DIALEMI, by director Nadine Otsobogo, is one of those films that draws the audience into the reality of its actors. The choice of the angles and framing of the life of the main character plunges us into the melancholy and solitude of his universe. As if a lifeline, he clutches to Elle, the abstract woman interpreted by Prudence Maïdou.

Shrouded in a deafening silence, worth more than words, the character closes within, refusing to open. Played by Laurent Owondo, a professor of literature at the University of Libreville and former Director of the National Theatre of Gabon. Alone in his seaside home he attempts to shape a human face into the stone that he chips away with his chisel. This is the face of ELLE, that through the ages has no wrinkles. She remains the beautiful young woman with a radiant smile at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in the photo that adorns his wall. With her many appearances and disappearances, she gives as well as takes away his inspiration.

In part, Dialemi (She's having fun) reflects its director. Founder of the Masuku Environmental Festival of Gabon, Nadine brings into this short film a greenery that frames this life of solitude. From nature, the abstract shadow of the actress arises to make His (the sculptor) nights sweeter. The director's attraction for the abstract is already visible in her film, Songe au rêve (2006), set in Senegal, in which Prudence Maïdou also acts with the late Oumar Seck.

From the abstract image in the suggestively-titled films, one notices the place that Nadine accords dreams in her work. She blends into the soul of her actor the strong bond that he maintains with his sculpture, which represents his dream, and for which there is no price.

Like this sculpture, female beauty is priceless in the eyes of Nadine, who does not hesitate to present it in its rawest splendour.

HIS sensitivity and fragility, passing through HER nudity, Nadine reveals the hidden parts of humanity.

Although African cinema has undergone some changes over the years, it must be noted that this way of presenting (nude) female beauty has not always been welcomed by everyone. Although taboos are being discarded one after the other, this one remains tenacious. How many actresses on the continent refuse a role that requires nudity? Many no doubt. A free spirited actress, and in addition to her enormous talent, Prudence Maïdou (Elle) knows how to act with her body. She is the muse that inspires the sculptor, giving him the smile during those rare moments of joy when he teaches his passion to the children. Similarly, in the feature film Dakar trottoirs (2013) by Senegalese director Hubert Laba Ndao, one finds this aspect in Prudence's acting. No, Prudence, is not imprudent, but rather she lives her art. And finally Prudence dances, having fun with her sculptor, who, as if by magic completes the sculpture, working wholeheartedly to sculpt her face in the famous Mbigou stone found in Gabon.

Recognised by Africiné and an award winner at many festivals, notably for the Bronze Stallion at FESPACO in 2013, and the 2014 Award for Best Short African Film (AMAA - African Movies Academy Awards, Nigeria), DIALEMI is a perfect illustration of love; love beyond carnal desire.

According to Nadine Otsobogo, the theme of the work is not necessarily love, it is the inspiration that touches us throughout the process: during the directing or scriptwriting or the production. Actually, it is what is within us, I wanted to talk about the inner love that inspires us every day, she said in an interview with Roderick Dèdègnonhou (Africiné).

The relationship to art, the dream, nature's beauty, emotions, all of this, Nadine shows us and makes us live it, throughout the 20-minute film.

Ghanaian-German Mo Asumang is a filmmaker, actress and television presenter based in Germany. Herself a victim of racist threats, she set out to find the origins of these racist beliefs. The documentary film, The Aryans (2014), is a personal journey into the ideologies of white supremacy held by German neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members of the U.S. Midwest that she meets along the way.

L’Association des femmes congolaises du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel (AFCC) presente, du 10 au 14 juin 2014 à Kinshasa, le festival « Cinéma au féminin » (CINEF). 

The Association of Congolese Women Filmmakers presents the festival Cinema au féminin (CINEF) from 10-14 June 2014 in Kinshasa.

The first edition of Cinema au féminin (CINEF) will be launched under the theme "Empowerment of Congolese women through its initiatives for development”. The theme will be developed during a seminar in which stakeholders in the cultural arena are invited to take stock of the current state of culture in DR Congo. The five-day festival will include screenings of films by Congolese women and a production and scriptwriting workshop—facilitated by Monique Mbeka Phoba. The L’Association des femmes cinéastes congolaises (AFCC) | The Association of Congolese Women Filmmakers are working to ensure the success of this first edition of the festival which will take place from 10-14 June 2014.

The idea for this event came about from the realization that there are still too few Congolese women in the world of cinema, while each in her own corner attempts to carve a space in the profession. And yet filmmaking is above all a team effort.

Members of the AFCC decided to join together in order to promote their work. Hence the festival aims to increase the number of women in this sector and facilitate the production and distribution of their work.

Moreover, by organizing this festival, the filmmakers also want to have their talents recognized nationally and internationally. 

The expected results of this festival include: raising the consciousness of Congolese women of the importance of the moving image professions; encourage the Congolese government, private, national and international organizations, to invest in cinema and audiovisual sectors. 

The network of women in cinema and the audiovisual has been created and a permanent framework is established in order to promote dialogue and exchange between them. 

Hence this appeal to women—in the name of equality—to embrace the cinema and audiovisual professions.

Les rencontres de 5 jours se dérouleront autour des projections des films réalisés par des Congolaises, un échange sur la production et un atelier d’écriture (animé par la cinéaste congolaise Monique Mbeka Phoba) seront au rendez-vous. L’Association des femmes cinéastes congolaises (AFCC) sont à pied d’œuvre pour la réussite de la première édition de leur festival « Cinema au Féminin » (Cinef) dont les activités vont se dérouler à Kinshasa du 10 au 14 juin prochain.

L’idée de l’organisation de cet événement culturel est partie du constat selon lequel les femmes congolaises sont encore trop peu nombreuses dans le monde du cinéma.

Ainsi, chacune dans son coin a essayé de créer une petite structure pour démarrer dans la profession. Pourtant, le cinéma est avant tout une affaire d’équipe.

Pour promouvoir leur travail, les membres de l’AFCC ont décidé d’unir leurs forces et renverser cet état de choses. De par son objectif, ce festival veut accroître le nombre des femmes dans ce secteur et faciliter la production et la diffusion de leurs œuvres.

Par ailleurs, en organisant ce festival, ces femmes cinéastes veulent également faire reconnaître leurs talents sur les plans national et international.

Les résultats attendus de ce festival sont, entre autres : faire connaître l’importance des métiers de l’image aux femmes congolaises ; motiver le gouvernement congolais, les privés, les organismes nationaux et internationaux à investir dans le cinéma et dans l’audiovisuel.

Le réseau des femmes cinéastes et de l’audiovisuel est créé et un cadre permanent est mis en place pour favoriser la circulation et l’échange entre elles.

D’où cet appel lancé à la femme, au nom de l’égalité, à embrasser ces métiers du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel.
