Eradicating Violence against Women and Girls through mainstream women’s audio visual narratives in marginalised urban and rural communities

This report summarises the findings of the project by Women Film Makers of Zimbabwe (WFOZ) on Eradicating Violence against Women and Girls through mainstreaming women’s audio visual narratives in marginalised urban and rural communities.

The methodologies adopted for this analysis included surveys and interviews. Films that involve violence against women and girls were sought and screened in different communities, followed by discussions. The films were used as tools to gather information in the communities’s understanding of VAWG as well as to raise awareness on issues and impacts of VAWG. A monitoring and evaluation exercise that measures changes before and after the screenings was also

carried out.

The purpose of the report is to share information gathered from communities engaged to prevent and obtain feedback on how WFOZ methodologies can be used in the future.

These Zimbabwean #MeToo stories break the silence of all forms of violence against women, allowing the survivor's stories to be told. Inspired by the Breaking the Silence project of the Institute of Creative Arts for Progress in Africa (ICAPA): The project seeks to give space to survivors of any form of violence and for whatever reason to speak out through different forms of art. The project's aim is to BREAK THE SILENCE SO AS TO BREAK THE CYCLE.

Formed in 1996, Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe's general objective is to increase the participation of women in the film industry in the country.

The two prominent organisations in the Zimbabwe film industry, International Images Film Festival for Women (IIFF), the flagship event of Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe (WFOZ); and the Zimbabwe International Film & Festival Trust (ZIFFT) are pleased to announce a JOINT FESTIVAL this year. IIFF will present its 16th edition of the festival in collaboration with the 19th edition of the Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFFT).

The Festival will be held from 26 August to 2 September 2017.

If you answered ‘YES’ to at least one question then this could be your opportunity.

Applications are invited for a bilingual (English and French) scriptwriting residency to be held in Senegal in May 2017.

International Images Film Festival (IIFF) screenings have found a new platform. Screenings held under the banner Women Movement Building: Film Dialogue Series started on the 29th of November 2015 at the Zimbabwe Women's Resource Centre and Network (ZWRCN). Harare, Zimbabwe.

The series was launched by a screening of Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe (WFOZ) production Peretera Maneta. The successful launch was followed up by a screening of IIFF 2015 Best Short Film Damaru during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. 

Screenings are always followed by discussions on the different struggles women and girls in Zimbabwe are facing. The dialogue is not focused on the problems, but on possible solutions. 

Sessions are always accompanied by performances ranging from drumming to poetry. This has been done because the main purpose of these sessions is to amplify the voices of women using different artistic expressions. The Film Dialogue Series is the result of partnership between ZWRCN and WFOZ.

Zoom in on Women! : Call for Scripts 2016– Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe, WFOZ

Deadline: 28 February 2016

Hey ladies, it’s time to tell our own stories!! If you are an African woman with a compelling story to tell, send your script to Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe. This is your chance to make those films! Production dates 2016/2017.

Preference will be given to films with few characters and few locations. Scripts should be:

- 60-80 minutes long.

- Have a strong female protagonist.

- Original and the sole property of the applicant.

Successful scripts will be produced for a prominent African television channel. A workshop with experienced scriptwriters will be held to make scripts production ready.

Women of Zimbabwe is an organisation that increases the participation and production capacity of women locally and regionally in the audiovisual industry. It also brings women’s issues to the attention of the cinema-viewing and television-watching public.
