An original, eclectic and creative filmmaker, Tapiwa Chipfupa worked on various projects in southern Africa before deciding to study. After gaining a Master’s degree from AFDA, Tapiwa received support from HotDocs (2016), Berlinale Talents (2015), Talents Durban (2013) and AfricaDocs (2010). Her projects have been acquired by broadcasters and won awards worldwide.

Originale, éclectique et créative, Tapiwa Chipfupa a travaillé sur de nombreux projets dans le sud de l’Afrique avant de poursuivre des études de Master à l’école de cinéma AFDA. Tapiwa a reçu le soutien de HotDocs (2016), Berlinale Talents (2015), Talents Durban (2013) et AfricaDocs (2010). Ses films ont été achetés par des diffuseurs internationaux et récompensés par plusieurs prix.

My identity crisis became a desire to understand my world.

Estranged from her family by a dispute over her marriage, Tapiwa Chipfupa attempts to reconcile the situation through encounters with other Zimbabwean women from all walks of life also facing their own challenges. The film develops as a brutally honest story of Zimbabwe’s women that paints a vivid and intriguing portrait of contemporary Zimbabwe and its vast contradictions.

Tapiwa Chipfupa s’est éloignée de sa famille suite à une dispute autour de son mariage. Depuis, elle cherche à comprendre sa situation en rencontrant d’autres femmes zimbabwéennes qui font face à leurs propres difficultés. Ce film raconte, avec une franchise brutale, l’histoire des femmes au Zimbabwe, dessinant un portrait fascinant de la société contemporaine et de ses contradictions.

La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde is a professional programme helping talented young directors from emerging countries increase their international exposure. Each year this programme, developed by the Institut français, in partnership with France Médias Monde – RFI, France 24, Monte Carlo Doualiya- with the support of The International Organization of La Fancophonie, invites ten directors working on their first or second feature films to attend the Festival de Cannes along with their producers.

La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde est un programme professionnel développé par l’Institut français pour favoriser l’émergence de la jeune création des pays du sud sur le marché international. Conçu en étroite collaboration avec le Festival de Cannes et le Marché du Film, le programme permet chaque année à une dizaine de réalisateurs sélectionnés accompagnés de leurs producteurs de venir au Festival de Cannes présenter et défendre leurs projets de premier ou deuxième long métrage.

Newly-liberated with productive farms and an education system that was the envy of its neighbours, Zimbabwe in the early 1980s was a land of plenty.

Within one person's childhood all that changed.

Filmmaker Tapiwa Chipfupa returns to the country of her birth to understand why the catastrophe happened.

Guided by a box of old family photographs and phone calls to her parents who are in exile in the UK, she traces the story of her family's life across Zimbabwe and the parallel story of the decline and collapse of the country.

Told from the perspective of a middle class African, this is a story of remembrance, of coming to terms with exile and change, and a reminder of the need to guard and protect hard-won freedoms.

Tapiwa Chipfupa: "The film was very challenging for me because it was a deeply personal and emotional journey. It was difficult to accept that none of my family were there and to see what had happened to the places where I grew up, to see what has become of the country of my childhood. But it was very rewarding in the sense that, like so many others, I had reached a place of acceptance with what it is today and had somehow forged a way forward."
