PRESS RELEASE

Mzansi Women’s Film Festival 5th edition call for submission is opened. Calling films of all genres by and about Women only. Submission will close on 30 April 2018, entries can be made via FilmFreeway.com

Rules:

Films must be directed by a woman, or featuring a woman in a significant creative role (only films with a female director/producer are eligible for awards).

Though we EMPHASIZE FILMS DIRECTED BY WOMEN or PRODUCED BY WOMEN, we will consider all films about women's stories and issues affecting women. We will not exclude films directed by men if the topic is one of significance to women.

Only films produced after 15 August 2016 will be considered AND films produced before 31 December 1999 as Classic films category.

Foreign language films will only be accepted if they are subtitled in English.

We do not accept works-in-progress and will not update a submission with a more recent cut. Please do not submit your film until it is complete.

Festival times are subject to delay or change.

If submitting more than one film, a separate completed entry is required for each title.

By submitting a film, the Submitter agrees to abide by these terms, rules, and guidelines.

NB: Accepted films by the festival will also be subject to the approval of the South African Film and Publication Board ( fpb.org.za ), The Film & Publication Board regulates the media environment through the classification of content by:
* The FPB classifies all film material distributed in South Africa (except that shown on TV as broadcasters have their own regulatory body).
* Maintaining relevance to the values and norms of South African society through scientific research
* Balancing the right to freedom of expression with an obligation to protect children from exposure to potentially disturbing, harmful and inappropriate materials.
*Protecting children from sexual exploitation in media content in order to educate the broader South African society to make informed choices.

The Mzansi Women’s Film Festival (MWFF) is a platform for women filmmakers showcasing films by women and about women. Established in 2014, this annual festival is held the first weekend in August – Women’s Month in South Africa.

Film submissions can be:

- Features

- Documentaries

- Animation

- Students

- Experimental

As micro, shorts and feature length. Closing for submission would be 31 May 2017.

The MWFF’s objectives are to:

- Create a reputable platform for women filmmakers to showcase their work.

- Create a reputable platform to showcase films made by and about women.

- Create an annual networking opportunity for women filmmakers to identify and access opportunities in the film industry.

- Facilitate access to training and/or development opportunities for women filmmakers.

- Create an awards event that recognises the work of female filmmakers.

In addition to showcasing their films, the MWFF is a platform to stimulate greater interest in films by and about women, and contribute towards integrating women filmmakers into mainstream filmmaking.

In 2016, the MWFF established partnerships with the Westbury Youth Centre and the Wot-if? Trust, who ran parallel MWFF screenings at the Westbury Youth Centre in Westbury, and the Father Louis Blondel Centre in Diepsloot, respectively.

Since its inception, the MWFF has screened over 100 films from across the world, as well as hosted over 30 workshops and conversations relating to women filmmakers and filmmaking.

The Mzansi Women’s Film Festival 2017 will be held from 3 – 6 August 2017.

Inspired by the 1956 Women’s March to Pretoria in South Africa in a fight against APARTHEID. Mzansi Women Film Festival will be hosting its 3rd edition in 2016 of Films by Women and about Women. Headlining the festival is short, feature films and conversations/ workshops. This is all in the spirit of Celebrating Women filmmakers, inspiring and empowering Women, encourage the spirit of engagement, collaboration, co-creation for a better and informed society  and paying homage to the founding Women of our arts.

Background

Mzansi Women Film Festival was founded in 2014 in collaboration with The Constitution Hill and 75 Films. It is a film festival that celebrates women filmmakers of South Africa, Africa and the World thus to encourage spirit of engagement, collaboration, co-create for a better and screen films about women and by women filmmakers. The festival is hosted at The Constitution Hill due to the heritage’s site history as it was once a Prison for Women thus honoring and celebration the spirit of the women who came before by watering the grounds many women walk on today. All films screened were 100% South African from independent women filmmakers and Big Fish School of Digital Filmmaking School in Johannesburg. The festival was greatly supported by Gauteng Film Commission.

Year 2015 is the festival’s 2nd year running and will for the first time screen films by other women filmmakers from outside South Africa , it will take place at The Constitution Hill on 7-8-9 August 2015 and for the first time have out-reach screenings ,workshops in and around Johannesburg. The 2015 edition of the festival is in partnership between The Constitution Hill, Destiny Ventures Events, 75 Films, Gracefully Consulting and other institutions within the film industry.
