Jihan El-Tahri: ‘Complexifying Restitution’ - Berlin Biennale 2022

Jihan El-Tahri: ‘Complexifying Restitution’ Berlin Biennale 2022

Image: Jihan El-Tahri, Complexifying Restitution, 2022, video, color, sound, approx. 15′; text, video still © Jihan El-Tahri

“Jihan El-Tahri is a filmmaker and visual artist. Her practice deals with materiality and the moving image. Working primarily with installation art, she often engages with the interstices between official history and memory in an attempt to reinterpret the moments of our history of which no traces have been left behind and to propose a new reading and alternative voice from a Global South perspective.
In ‘Complexifying Restitution’ (2022), El-Tahri invites the viewer into the spacetime of a project that brings together archive researchers, artists, and filmmakers to interpret, rethink, and reappropriate the archive.” (Joud Halawani Al-Tamimi)

Co-production : CBA, GSARA

My name is Rosine Mbakam, from Cameroon where I grew up and lived until 27 years old according to tradition. In 2007, I left to continue my studies in Belgium. It was the first time leaving my country. My mother’s name is Mâ Brêh in Bamiléké, she has always lived in Cameroon. She grew up in the maquis where her family, as many others, fled French colonial repression. She was married at 18 years old to a man introduced to her by her parents. The film is a face-to-face that examines and and poses questions regarding the choices of two women. Two generations face-to-face, two women who share their intimate selves, their pain, their desires.

The film recounts the return of a young woman to her native country, Cameroon. A reunion with her mother, a reunion constructed around the revisited spaces of their two lives. Two different journeys that intersect around traditions that are underpin their two personalities. In search of buried sentiments, histories, her history. Giving life to latent voices in the silence, illuminating the faces of women in her community that formed her, in which the other colors of their faces emerge.

African Diasporas. USA-Ghana. Nana Mensah: Queen of Glory - what it's like to be a child of the diaspora - interview with Janet A. Leigh on Digital Spy

African Diasporas. USA-Ghana
Nana Mensah: Queen of Glory
 - what it's like to be a child of the diaspora -
Interview with Janet A. Leigh on Digital Spy

I think what's interesting is how much Sarah, the character, is attempting to define herself outside of her culture – you know, the culture she was raised in; the neighborhood she was raised in.
She did that, and got to exercise who she was out in the world, and then bring that raw form back to her place of origin.
I think the thing is, we want to be able to define ourselves, right? We are so tired of having the world define us. -- Nana Mensah

Comedy - USA - 75min - 2021

Synopsis (digitalspy.com)
Queen of Glory follows the story of Sarah, who must juggle familial and cultural expectations during one of the hardest times in any adult's life, the death of her mother. With this delicately humorous story, Nana tackles the difficulties first immigrants feel as they struggle to straddle two worlds, asking two very important questions: What do we owe them? Versus what do we owe ourselves?
