"Black Women Disrupt the Web", a multi-country web series competition and call for entries

UPDATE
See the Semi-Finalist announced April 9, 2021 (afterward original post)

For Immediate Release:

ANNOUNCING “BLACK WOMEN DISRUPT THE WEB,” A MULTI-COUNTRY WEB SERIES COMPETITION AND CALL FOR ENTRIES

 https://www.blackwomendisrupt.com/press/black-women-disrupt-the-web-launch-announcement

Five Black Women Writer-Directors To Be Featured in Original Web Series Showcase:
Imagining Black Futures

January 29, 2021 (Atlanta, USA and Cape Town, South Africa) - Black Women Disrupt, along with Antoinette Engel and Dylan Valley, an international collaborative dedicated to uplifting Black women creatives and entrepreneurs, is announcing a new project: Black Women Disrupt the Web (BWDW). This is a global competition to produce an original web series showcase. The call for entries aims to attract proposals from Black women writer-directors from Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, and South Africa for three (3) three-minute episodes providing new perspectives on the theme, “Imagining Black Futures”.

Black women from Brazil, Colombia, Kenya, and South Africa are invited to submit original proposals for a fictional web series between February 1st and March 1st. A selection committee will choose five (5) semi-finalists to receive dedicated mentorship, production funding, professional development and inclusion in a global, online, web series showcase that will be evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges in July. The winner will receive a cash prize alongside support in navigating distribution, networking events, markets and festivals.

“The goal is to celebrate the richness of a broader and multilingual African diaspora and to raise its visibility worldwide through outstanding works of fiction film content made available on the web.” Zakiya Carr Johnson, Founder, Black Women Disrupt

Black Women Disrupt the Web seeks to elevate interest and investment in content created by Black women from the African continent as well as the African diaspora in the Americas, Europe and around the world. Through an accessible online showcase in several languages, the collective will connect communities using new platforms to share stories, engage in dialogue and explore economic empowerment.

"Web series as its own particular form of internet-based television has broadened and transformed the film and TV landscape. Web series have lower barriers to entry, and as such Black women creators (shout out Issa Rae!) who would have normally been marginalised in the mainstream, have gone on to transform what the mainstream looks like." Dylan Valley, Filmmaker

Black Women Disrupt the Web will partner with a VOD platform for a global showcase of the final content. The competition will offer an online Master Class series for applicants, as well as access to the Black Women Disrupt network, resources and special online events. Each of the five semi-finalists will be matched with mentors to guide them in script development, production and post-production, as well as the basics of industry business and marketing. Black Women Disrupt the Web will document the process of each submission, from editing through to the final cut and into festival participation and promotion. Virtual panels, workshops, events and communication opportunities will raise the visibility of the finalist, who will be awarded a package that includes distribution support and a cash prize.

COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on the world and disproportionately affected Black communities, laying bare the existing inequities and divides in our societies. Black Women Disrupt (U.S.) alongside filmmaker Dylan Valley and producer Antoinette Engel (South Africa), recognize that artists in particular have been dealt a severe blow, specifically those in the film industry which requires extensive on-site collaboration. Yet many artists continue to produce work and create solutions to our ‘new normal’ under the strict but necessary social distancing guidelines.

Women Of The Lens Film Digital Broadcast Festival: Open for Submissions - Deadline August 2018

Women Of The Lens
Film Digital Broadcast Festival

Open for Submissions
Deadline August 2018

Women Of The Lens was created to reveal the complexity, diversity and multiplicities of black women and women of colour.

PRESS RELEASE

Festival Dates and Venue Announced

London, 15th June 2018: Women Of The Lens Film Digital Broadcast Festival is open for film, digital and broadcast submissions using FilmFreeway as the portal for production submission with a deadline of August 2018.

This year we're pleased to be collaborating with Genesis Cinema, 93-95 Mile End Road, London E1 4UJ as the venue for the Festival's event on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November 2018.

This UK-based Festival was created to showcase the work and challenge perceptions of black women and women of colour in front of and behind the camera. The underrepresentation of diversity in the creative industries remains stubbornly low despite the protestations of change and 'acknowledgement' of disparity. Women Of The Lens was born because the wait for those in positions of change to do something about the improvement of the representation of black women in British industries both in front of and behind the camera, has expired.

You don't have to be black and/or identify as a woman to submit productions, what we will be looking for is your commitment to changing perceptions in front of and behind the camera. So we ask, what do the narratives look like for black women in films? Are we the audience following her story, her motives, her actions or is she a stereotypical 'side-piece' for a run-of-the-mill story? Behind the scenes, the Festival is asking well, who do you have in decision-making positions in your productions? Are you seeking to diversify your crew?

Founder and Director Jennifer G. Robinson says; “Following a first was always going to be difficult. The Festival's launch was humbling, such was the support and engagement from audiences both on and offline. The quality of the productions submitted was great. The bar has been set and it is high, but with the growing sense of purpose and the mounting sense of worth and demand for recognition for women's talents in the industry, meeting that bar can be achieved.  My responsibility to filmmakers has not changed as they submit their precious creations and providing content which reflects audience life experiences. I’m excited by the coming events and humbled by the support already received.”

About Founder/Director Jennifer G. Robinson

The brainchild behind Women Of The Lens is Jennifer G. Robinson. Jennifer has over 25 years of experience working in the creative industries to include education. Jennifer has worked with other industry professionals to produce one the longest running London-based film festivals – the black filmmaker international film festival. To say that Jennifer is ‘passionate’ about the industry is clichéd, but it’s the best word to use that describes her innate commitment and loyalty to create and deliver a Festival of integrity to grow to fulfil its ethos as described above.

2018 Focus and Theme
Africa’s animation industry is still very much in its infancy. It is a vibrant and exciting space with a lot of talent and growth, but there is still a lot of structure and development that has to happen for the industry to mature.

Talents Durban aims to remain the fertile soil for aspiring film professionals. We intend on bringing together highly skilled professionals to develop the animation industry and discover hidden gems. In this regard, the programme will focus on animation, with the aim to stimulate conversation and inspire filmmakers into the world of animation.

This year’s theme “Breaking Rules” is a culmination of current topical issues on the African continent. The idea of breaking forth, expressing one’s individuality and creativity is difficult and somewhat near impossible in a continent filled with rules and boundaries. We live and breathe in a society of rules! Rules should not be broken at any given time. Too often we spend our time following rules without thinking twice. Some of these rules are spoken, but many of them are unspoken. We follow them because it’s simply easier to do.

For the longest time we’ve been boxed in, with boundaries placed on creativity levels and ways of expression. We need to break free from the dull and mundane rules of society. Break forth and embrace our diversity, our inimitable footprint and become masters of our own destinies.

Rules were made to be broken!

Selection process
Talents Durban attracts over 500 applications from emerging and already established film professionals across the African continent. This coming edition, Talents Durban will invite 15 Talents, carefully selected by an international selection committee. Prospective Talents are required to complete their application online provided they have a recognised sample of past work and an ongoing project.

CaribbeanTales and the Durban FilmMart present CineFAM - Africa, an accelerator program for African women filmmakers
For Immediate Release: May 17, 2017
Durban, South Africa
Toronto, Canada
CaribbeanTales Media Group (CTMG) and the Durban FilmMart (DFM) today announce a new partnership to support the development of original serialized television content created by women from Africa and the African Diaspora.
CineFAM is an initiative of CaribbeanTales to support bold original films by women of colour worldwide. “Cinefam” in the Haitian-Creole language means “films by women”. This Accelerator aims to build capacity and creative leadership among women of colour who are underrepresented in leadership roles.
“We are absolutely thrilled to embark on this new partnership with CaribbeanTales. The Accelerator Incubator Program will provide an exciting new platform to support the development of women-led audio-visual content in Africa, and promote more representational narratives. Through this partnership, we hope to build a bridge between the two organisations that will raise the voices of African women filmmakers,” said Toni Monty, Head of Durban Film Office and DFM the co-production and finance market, which is a joint programme of the Durban Film Office (DFO) and the Durban International Film Festival (DIFF), South Africa.
“CaribbeanTales was founded and run by women of color from the Caribbean and African Diaspora so this initiative is close to our hearts. This partnership provides an unprecedented platform and opportunities for South African, African and African Diaspora women film producers,” says CaribbeanTales CEO Frances-Anne Solomon. “Africa is a natural partner for us in the Caribbean and we couldn’t be more pleased to be building a relationship with DFM to bring our Incubator Accelerator program to Africa!”
CineFAM - Africa, which will be led by CaribbeanTales Vice-President Nicole Brooks, is a two-day program that will take place during the Durban FilmMart July 14 to 17, 2017.
For this first edition of CineFAM - Africa, South African women producers and African women producers living in South Africa are invited to submit their film projects of original serialized television content for consideration. CTI is a year-round development and production hub for Caribbean and Caribbean Diaspora Producers that aims to create strong, compelling and sustainable content for the global market. REMINDER: African Student Film Festival 2017 Call for Entry

REMINDER: African Student Film Festival 2017 Call for Entry

2017 5th edition
Theme: Africa Potential. Our perspective

Call for Entry: 27 February 2017
Deadline: 21 July 2017

The African Student Film Festival in Nigeria is an initiative borne out of deep thoughts for the future of the beautiful continent of Africa, in order to promote and protect her cultural values.

African Student Film Festival Initiative is an annual Pan-African festival targeted at discovering, encouraging and rewarding African young filmmakers and helping them to get funds and grants. With six days intensive training and workshop on various film making techniques, participants will learn from participants what will make them masters of their own.

African Student Film Festival Initiative after the 2015 Edition decided to be a Traveling Pan-African Student Film Festival. The reason why we decided on this is, since ASFFi is a student event, it should be held in Higher Institutions to get more students participation and involvement. University of Lagos Creative Arts Department would be hosting the 2017 ASFFi event.

Country in Focus:
The country in focus for the year 2017 is South Africa, because of its rich Culture and Diversity. We are particularly focusing on BIG FISH School of Digital Filmmaking, this is because of their out standing documentary films which has continuously been winning the best Documentary Film since the inspection of ASFFi.

We are also taking a look at Kwazulu-Natal Film Commission South Africa, as they are encouraging Co-productions and also encouraging not only established filmmakers, but also emerging talents to come to Kwazulu to make their films. They have some kind of support and grants for this.

PRESS RELEASE

Want to see your film on the big screen?
Submissions for Film Africa 2017 are now open!

Film Africa is The Royal African Society’s annual festival celebrating the best African cinema from across the continent and diaspora. Now in its seventh year, the festival has become the key platform for African cinema in London and the UK.

From Friday 27 October - Sunday 5 November 2017, we'll be bringing another exciting film programme of films to 10 venues across London. This will be accompanied by a vibrant series of events, including director Q&As, talks and discussions; professional workshops and master classes; school screenings and family activities; the Industry Forum; and Film Africa LIVE! music nights.

In 2016, almost 5,000 people attended the festival featuring a wide-ranging programme of 58 films from across 22 African countries, including 33 World, European, UK or London premieres. We also hosted 23 filmmakers and talent from the continent and the diaspora and a further 32 industry experts and guest contributors who helped to bring the programme to life through Q&As, talks and panel discussions.

In line with our commitment to screening the finest and boldest contemporary African cinema, the festival accepts films of all lengths and genres, including fiction, documentary, animation and experimental titles. There is no submission fee and, while our main objective is to represent a wide range of films and filmmakers stemming from across the continent and the Diaspora, we also accept submissions from non-African filmmakers whose films relate to Africa. Our focus is on quality from a range of African countries and genres.

Film Africa accepts entries via online submissions platform FilmFreeway.com. FilmFreeway offers free HD online screeners, Vimeo and YouTube integration, and more. Click to submit your film: filmfreeway.com/festival/FilmAfrica. The deadline is 30 June 2017. We look forward to receiving your submissions.
