FESPACO 2015 : ECOWAS Best Woman Director Award | CEDEAO Prix de la meilleure réalisatrice

Fespaco 2015 : the Best Woman Director Award presented by ECOWAS | le Prix de la meilleure réalisatrice décerné par la CEDEAO

SOURCE: AFRIK.COM | 5 March/mars 2015 | by/par Frédéric Schneider

[English]

At the 24th edition of the Pan-African Festival of Cinema and Television of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will, for the first time, present an award for Best Woman Director in order to promote women.

After the Special award for integration, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to award a new prize this year for the 24th edition of the Pan-African Festival of Cinema and Television Ouagadougou (FESPACO). The award for Best Woman Director will be presented by the sub-regional organization "to promote women as innovators and as major agents of development", APA reports.

10 million CFA francs

ECOWAS further strengthens its position within this high mass of African cinema by awarding this second prize; having since 1993, awarded a special prize for integration. Jean-Pierre Ezin, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Culture of ECOWAS, made the announcement on Monday, during a press conference organized by the festival.

"ECOWAS's aim in awarding the prize is to recognize the best woman director from a country in the sub-region, hence promoting women, since it is particularly difficult for women to be able to showcase their creativity, and most importantly, there is no sustainable development without women”, Ezin emphasised. This new award makes ECOWAS the most generous of the 12 special award grantors for this festival. The West African organisation presents the integration award of 15 million CFA and 10 million CFA for the award for best woman director.

[English]
Since 1996 and 2002 respectively, the United States and Canada conduct a systematic policy of repatriation of all foreign residents who have committed crimes on their soil. These range from violent crimes to simple convictions for driving while intoxicated or petty theft.
Deported follows these North American offenders as they return to their homeland: Haiti, a country they do not know and a hostile land for them.

Synopsis

[English]
In Algiers we meet Nassima, a forgotten heroine of the Algerian revolution who tells us her story of women in the war - her fight for an independent Algeria. The filmmaker returns every year to visit Nassima, and through her accounts, Guessoum reconstructs a part her own history and begins to understand Algeria today via the past. 10949 Women is foremost a story about women, but it also tries to understand vital questions: What is freedom, and how much do we have to pay to get it?
