Timbuktu, Le Chagrin Des Oiseaux by Mauritanian director Abderrahmane Sissako screens Thursday, May 15. It is the story of Kidane who lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya, and Issan, their twelve-year-old shepherd boy. Close to the sand palace, Tombouctou, the city falls into the hands of religious fundamentalists, which will be the “pebble in his shoe”, even his soul, as well as his country, Mali.
The film will be screened at the Film Market on Saturday the 17th at 11:30 (3 Star), Sunday, 18 May at 13:30 (Lérins 1) and Monday, May 19th at 10:00 am (Gray d'Albion 1). Distributed by Le Pacte, the film will be shown in theaters in France.
Philippe Lacôte will ascend the stairs this Saturday, 17 May in the Un Certain Regard section. His film Run received support from the Fonds Francophone (OIF / CIRTEF). The Franco-Ivorian weaves through the story a "Young Patriot" (Ivorian political movement) who flees after killing the Prime Minister of his country, he must then take on the face and clothing of a madman wandering through the city. He falls into each of his destinies as he flees a former life, hence the film’s title, Run.
Gabon, a small country in Central Africa and a major producer of film, comes to Cannes. The Gabonese Institute of Image and Sound (IGIS) is proud to have two very popular films in the Short Film Corner: Moane Mory by Amédé Nkoulou (20 min, social Drama) and Return to the Source (9 min, fantasy drama) by Samantha Biffot, a winner at the last FESPACO. Filmmaker Imunga Ivanga is the Director General of the IGIS. The Gabon Stand, 25.03, is located at the Palais du Festival.
African short films in the Short Film Corner numbers 49, South Africa leading the pack with 10 films, while Tunisia holds its hand high with 9 films including Peau de Colle by director Kaouther Ben Hénia, whose film is supported by the Fonds Francophone. The filmmaker is also in the prestigious ACID selection, with her first feature film Le Challat de Tunis, which also benefits from the support of the Francophone funding. This mockumentary takes us back to the summer of 2003 in Tunis, where a man circulating on a motorcycle slashed the buttocks of women in the street. Presently, Le Challat de Tunis is a great theatrical success in Tunisia.
Congo DRC is also present with the film Mbote ! by Tshoper Kabambi, a dramatic comedy in the day of the life of Kanto an unemployed youth of Kinshasa.
Moussa Touré is a member of the 2014 jury of the Un Certain Regard section where the Senegalese director shone with his film La Pirogue. Chadian Mahamat-Saleh Haroun is on the jury of the Short Film / Cinéfondation.

Philippe Lacôte montera les marches ce samedi 17 mai dans la section Un certain regard. Son film Run a bénéficié du soutien du Fonds Francophone (OIF / CIRTEF). Le Franco-Ivoirien tricote sur les pas de Run, un "Jeune Patriote" (une mouvance politique ivoirienne) qui s'enfuit, après avoir tué le Premier ministre de son pays. Pour cela, il a dû prendre le visage et les vêtements d'un fou, errant à travers la ville. Il est tombé dans chacun de ses destins, en s'enfuyant d'une ancienne vie. C'est pour ça qu'il s'appelle Run.
Timbuktu, Le Chagrin Des Oiseaux du réalisateur mauritanien Abderrahmane Sissako est projeté le jeudi 15 mai. C'est l'histoire de, Kidane qui vit paisiblement dans les dunes avec sa femme Satima, sa fille Toya, et Issan, leur jeune berger âgé de douze ans. Tout près de son palais de sable, Tombouctou, la ville tombée aux mains des fondamentalistes religieux, sera le caillou dans son pied voire son âme et celui de son pays, le Mali.
Le film sera projeté au Marché du film le samedi 17 à 11h30 (Star 3), le Dimanche 18 mai à 13h30 (Lérins 1) et Lundi 19 mai à 10h00 (Gray d'Albion 1). Il sera distribué dans les salles en France par Le Pacte.
Du même distributeur, signalons aussi Entente cordiale (We Come As Friends), le second film de l'Autrichien Hubert Sauper diffusé au Marché du Film ce mercredi 14 mai, à 14h00 (Olympia 5).
Le Gabon !
Petit pays d'Afrique Centrale et important producteur de films, le Gabon est à Cannes. Les gabonais disposent dans le Palais du festival du Stand 25.03. L'Institut gabonais de l'Image et du Son (IGIS) peut s'enorgueillir d'avoir deux films dans la très courue Short Film Corner: Moane Mory de Amédé Nkoulou (20 min, Drame social) et Retour aux sources (9 min, drame fantastique) de Samantha Biffot, primée au dernier Fespaco.
Le cinéaste Imunga Ivanga (L'Ombre de Liberty, Dôlè, Les Tirailleurs d'ailleurs, …) est le Directeur Général de l'IGIS.
Les courts métrages africains sont au nombre de 49, au Short Film Corner. Si l'Afrique du Sud mène le peloton avec 10 films, la Tunisie lui tient la dragée haute avec 9 films dont Peau de Colle de la réalisatrice Kaouther Ben Hénia, film soutenu par le Fonds Francophone. La cinéaste est aussi dans la prestigieuse sélection de l'ACID, avec son premier long métrage Le Challat de Tunis également bénéficiaire du soutien du fonds francophone. Ce mocumentaire nous ramène à l'été 2003, à Tunis, où circulait un homme en moto qui lacérait les fesses des femmes dans la rue. En ce moment, Le Challat de Tunis est le grand succès en salles en Tunisie.
Le Congo RDC aligne lui aussi un film avec Mbote ! de Tshoper Kabambi, une comédie dramatique sur la journée de Kanto, jeune kinois au chômage.
Moussa Touré est membre du Jury 2014, de la section Un certain Regard où ce réalisateur sénégalais avait brillé avec son film La Pirogue. Le Tchadien Mahamat-Saleh Haroun est dans le Jury des Courts Métrages / Cinéfondation.
