Joy Nwosu, author of "Cinema e Africa nera", published in Italy in 1968 and reedited in 2014 | publié en Italie en 1968 et réédité en 2014

Joy Nwosu, author of "Cinema e Africa nera", published in Italy in 1968 and reedited in 2014

A discovery in plain view. Joy Nwosu’s book on cinema and Africa, "Cinema e Africa nera" published in Italy in 1968, was reedited in 2014, also in Italian, under the title Cinema e Africa, with preface by Domenico Argentieri and introduction by Leonardo De Franceschi. Published by Aracne editrice.

At the time, a flurry of interviews and articles emerged in English and Italian. Kudos to Leonardo De Franceschi who was instrumental in bringing Dr. Joy Nwosu and her work back into the spotlight. The African Women in Cinema Blog has now discovered this jewel with much excitement!

by Leonardo De Franceschi
Rome/Los Angeles, July 2014

This week Cinemafrica shares with you the integral version of a conversation with Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko, a Nigerian-born soprano and ethnomusicologist, based in Los Angeles, who released in 1968 a book in Italian called "Cinema e Africa nera" for roman editor Tindalo.

This book has been recently re-edited with the title "Cinema e Africa" for Aracne editrice.
“Cinema e Africa” is currently available in paperback format and can be ordered exclusively via Aracne editrice through this http://www.aracne-editrice.it/index.php/pubblicazione.html?item=9788854876538

This conversation has been realized in a written form via e-mail on July 2014, and included in the book, but translated into Italian and in a shorter version.

The interview has been republished in: Black Camera, an International Film Journal, 15.2 (Spring 2024): 225–39 with a feature article entitled, Mapping the Trajectory of an African Women’s Cinematic Consciousness: Joy Nwosu Lo-Bamijoko: Cinema e Africa Nera and a Seminal Moment of Africa/Diaspora Cinematic Discourse in Italy.”

Zélie Asava : Book - Mixed Race Cinemas, Multiracial Dynamics in America and France | Livre « Cinémas mixtes, la dynamique multiraciale aux Etats-Unis et en France »

Mixed Race Cinemas, Multiracial Dynamics in America and France by/par Zélie Asava [traduction en français du titre: Cinémas mixtes, la dynamique multiraciale aux Etats-Unis et en France]

Book description
Using critical race theory and film studies to explore the interconnectedness between cinema and society, Zélie Asava traces the history of mixed-race representations in American and French filmmaking from early and silent cinema to the present day. Mixed Race Cinemas covers over a hundred years of filmmaking to chart the development of (black/white) mixed representations onscreen. With the 21st century being labelled the Mulatto Millennium, mixed bodies are more prevalent than ever in the public sphere, yet all too often they continue to be positioned as exotic, strange and otherworldly, according to 'tragic mulatto' tropes. This book evaluates the potential for moving beyond fixed racial binaries both onscreen and off by exploring actors and characters who embody the in-between. Through analyses of over 40 movies, and case studies of key films from the 1910s on, Mixed Race Cinemas illuminates landmark shifts in local and global cinema, exploring discourses of subjectivity, race, gender, sexuality and class. In doing so, it reveals the similarities and contrasts between American and French cinema in relation to recognising, visualising and constructing mixedness. Mixed Race Cinemas contextualizes and critiques raced and 'post-race' visual culture, using cinematic representations to illustrate changing definitions of mixed identity across different historical and geographical contexts.
