Fanta Régina Nacro, filmmaker and producer from Burkina Faso reflects on the Covid-19 pandemic (May 2020) Translation from French.

Here I am confined to Ouagadougou. This pandemic plunged me into a feeling of sadness and terrible frustration, of not being able to experience the warmth of human contact and the expression of African solidarity during social events. The frustration of the contradictions and the discordance regarding the urgency for developing a Covid-19 vaccine, and the disregard towards the efforts of African researchers. Covid-19 made me think of three essential elements: the fragility of our world in terms of health, the inequality when dealing with this pandemic, the fragility of life, isolation from family, the fragility of the economy. We have seen the lack of solidarity especially in Europe towards health personnel, and in Africa the rediscovery of healthy living. There is the element of death, the impotence when confronting this illness, this feeling of fear. For me the most important confirmation is that we are all human beings, confronted with the same anguish, destined to come together in solidarity and reciprocity.

Somewhere in Africa. After ten years of bloody ethnic war, the Nayaks, the President's ethnic group, and the Bonandés, rebels supporting Colonel Theo, are on the point of celebrating the peace agreement.
But the reconciliation festivities are overshadowed by the terrible barbarities committed by both sides.

Leaving behind the signature humour of her earlier short films, director Fanta Régina Nacro has no qualms about portraying the violence enclosed by the story while leading the story to an unexpected bid for peace.

La nuit de la vérité est un film écrit à la mémoire d'un homme.
Accusé d'avoir fomenté un coup d'état, il fut d'abord torturé et emprisonné.

Une nuit, des hommes préparèrent un barbecue, l'attachèrent et le firent cuire à petit feu jusqu'au matin. À sept heures du matin, il mourait atrocement.

Cet homme était mon oncle.

Il y eût aussi ce vendredi noir où des musulmans de mon quartier, à Ouagadougou, s'entretuèrent à coups de couteaux et de machettes parce qu'ils ne s'entendaient pas sur le choix du nouvel imam. Des sages ont pu calmer les esprits et éviter une guerre civile.

Enfin, comment oublier la Yougoslavie, le Rwanda, le Burundi, le Soudan, le Zaïre, le Congo … mais aussi tant d'autres pays du monde confrontés à des guerres civiles ? Sur le thème des rivalités ethniques, nous avons voulu écrire un drame "shakespearien".

La violence et la cruauté n'y sont pas exposées avec complaisance, mais intégrées à une progression dramatique.

Fanta Régina Nacro (Burkina Faso) Tigre Tigresse -Tiger Tigress (17 mn)

Fanta Régina Nacro was born in 1962 in Tenkodogo, Burkina Faso. She entered into the world of cinema through the great gate. This desire for cinema lead her to INAFEC of Ouagadougou, the mythical African film school in which several generations of African filmmakers attended. There she received her first degree in audiovisual science and techniques. In 1986 she earned a Master’s Degree in Film and Audiovisual Studies at the University of Paris IV and in 1989 she received a diploma in filmmaking at the Sorbonne. In 1993, she founded her own production company, Les Films du Défi, located in Ouagadouogou. She currently is studying for a doctorate in Education.

Fanta Régina Nacro is among the celebrated filmmakers who are part of Scenarios from Africa, a community mobilization, education and media process about HIV/AIDS carried out with and for young people. Scenarios from Africa gives children and young adults an exciting opportunity to educate themselves and others about HIV/AIDS by inviting them to participate with internationally acclaimed directors in the production of a growing collection of short films.

The Making of Tiger Tigress by Fanta Nacro

“Tiger, Tigress” is a provocative comedy that takes a critical look at some of the things that make women vulnerable to HIV infection. A truck driver named Morpheus, who has a woman at every truck stop, suddenly finds himself in a world turned upside down: a world in which women reign supreme in society and call all the shots. The story is based on an idea written by Marlène Amégankpoé, aged 21, of Benin, during the last Scenarios from Africa scriptwriting contest.
