"Since I was involved in the Ivorian crisis, at first it was really to externalize my pain, so as not to go under. Writing prevented me from dying, my whole family remained in Côte d’Ivoire, including my mother to whom I was very attached. I never wanted to live outside, I am a film professional, I studied abroad but I always wanted to live in Côte d'Ivoire. In her recently released book, Et si c’etait à refaire ? Confidences sur un parcours de vie (Translation: And if it was to be redone? Reflections on a life’s journey), Hanny Tchelley confides the personal and political peregrinations, choices, in her life as artist, activist, citizen.

Et si c’etait à refaire ? Actress-activist-producer Hanny Tchelley, who founded the International Festival of Short Films of Abdijan (FICA), also produced the 2002 series, Vies de Femmes. The 26-minute series of six episodes traces the experiences of six prominent African women in West Africa.

J’ai été impliquée dans la crise ivoirienne. Au départ c’est vraiment pour extérioriser ma douleur, pour ne pas sombrer. Écrire m’a permis de ne pas mourir, toute ma famille est restée en Côte d’Ivoire ainsi que ma mère à qui j’étais très attachée. Moi je n’ai jamais voulu vivre à l’extérieur, je fais du cinéma, j’ai étudié à l’extérieur mais j’ai toujours voulu vivre en Côte d’Ivoire et donc je n’étais pas préparée à affronter l’extérieur, en tout cas pas dans ces conditions.
