“FOCUS: Thérèse Sita Bella, Safi Faye and the evolution of African women’s cinematic practice”
As Rosine Mbakam (of the KASK & Conservatorium / School of Arts Gent, Belgium) prepared for the program “FOCUS: Thérèse Sita Bella, Safi Faye and the evolution of African women’s cinematic practice” during the month of March, the sad news came that Safi Faye had passed away. She had invited her hoping she would be present to talk about her work; the silence, in the guise of a response, was soon evident. I was programmed to make a presentation on the evolution of pioneers such as Safi Faye: a tribute to her life and work came naturally, followed by a presentation about the significance of her legacy on the women who follow in her footsteps. The statement above was part of the tribute.

Quel bonheur et honneur ce fut de vous rencontrer et de vous rendre hommage au Sénégal, en votre présence à Saint-Louis en 2017. Nous ne sommes pas prêts d'oublier nos très longues et passionnantes conversations. Votre séjour à Saint-Louis pour présenter vos films a profondément marqué celles et ceux qui vous ont approché durant ces quelques jours. Les élèves du lycée de jeunes filles Ameth Fall, les étudiantes et les étudiants de l'UGB et tous les jeunes cinéastes venus de nombreux pays d'Afrique participer aux rencontres Tënk (Docmonde). Merci encore de nous avoir fait confiance.
Que la terre vous soit légère chère Safi Faye. Que vous puissiez trouver la paix.

What a pleasure and honor it was to meet you and to pay tribute to you in Senegal, in your presence in Saint-Louis in 2017. We will not forget our long and fascinating conversations. Your stay in Saint-Louis to present your films, profoundly marked those who met you during those few days. The schoolgirls at the Ameth Fall high school, the students of the Université Gaston Berger and all the young filmmakers who came from numerous African countries to take part in the Tënk (Docmonde) meetings. Thank you again for trusting in us.
May the earth rest lightly upon you, dear Safi Faye. May you find peace.

« Mane nobiscum, Safi Faye », Reste avec nous, Safi Faye ! Hélas, cette parole est vaine, car notre grande Cinéaste a vécu. S’il est vrai que, avec cette disparition qui nous émeut, le Sénégal et son cinéma sont abattus de ce deuil, l’Afrique et son Septième Art partagent, sans conteste, la douleur énorme qui s’est abattue sur nous ce matin », lit-on dans le communiqué où il est aussi mentionné : « Comme un signe du destin, Safi a choisi, en retournant au Ciel, la veille de l’ouverture du Festival panafricain de cinéma et de la Télévision de Ouagadougou (FESPACO), de s’élever ainsi avec le rideau et de fixer, à jamais, son nom sur les écrans, sur tous les écrans qui reflètent les images du talent voire du génie créateur de l’Afrique », lit-on dans le communiqué.
Le Ministre, Aliou Sow, au nom de Son Excellence, Monsieur Macky Sall, Président de la République, du Gouvernement, de toute la grande famille du Cinéma et de la Culture, a présenté les condoléances à la famille de Safi Faye et à toute l’Afrique du Cinéma et de l’audiovisuel. « Que la terre lui soit légère », a-t-il formulé.

If it is true that, with this departure which has shaken us, Senegal and its cinema world are devastated by this grief, Africa and its Seventh Art share without question, the enormous pain which fell on us this morning.”…"As a symbol of destiny, Safi chose, by returning to Heaven the day before the opening of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO), to rise, thus, with the curtain, and to affix, forever, her name on the screens, on all the screens which reflect the images of the talent, indeed, of the creative genius of Africa.”
The Minister, Aliou Sow, on behalf of His Excellency, Monsieur Macky Sall, President of the Republic, of the Government, of the whole family of Cinema and Culture, presented condolences to the family of Safi Faye and to all of the world of Cinema and the Audiovisual of Africa. “May the earth rest lightly upon her.”

First woman filmmaker in Senegal, Pioneer of African cinema.
Safi, we were there for your return to Senegal, when you came to join your ancestors of whom you speak so fondly, you have gone to join "Mossane" who you loved so much.
We wanted to welcome you during our last festival. You, the first Senegalese woman filmmaker, but you were already sick and you could not attend the beautiful tribute we paid to you in the hall that bears your name.
Safi, we will continue to show your films which have not aged at all; we will continue to make your work known to the generations to come, so that they may experience your endearing respect for the Serer Culture.
Safi, through your films, you live in our memories.

L’Institut français a appris avec tristesse la disparition de la cinéaste sénégalaise Safi Faye, qui était l'une des pionnières du cinéma africain et la première femme à avoir réalisé un long-métrage en Afrique subsaharienne.
Safi Faye était une grande cinéaste qui laisse derrière elle des films engagés, puissants et magnifiquement réalisés, dont trois figurent au catalogue de la Cinémathèque Afrique : Kaddu Beykat (Lettre Paysanne) en 1975, Fad’Jal en 1979, et Mossane en 1996.
Nos pensées vont à sa famille et à ses proches.

The French Institute learned with sadness of the death of Senegalese filmmaker Safi Faye, who was one of the pioneers of African cinema and the first woman to have directed a feature film in sub-Saharan Africa.
Safi Faye was a great cineaste who left behind committed, powerful and magnificently produced films, three of which appear in the catalog of the Cinémathèque Afrique: Kaddu Beykat (Lettre Paysanne) in 1975, Fad'Jal in 1979, and Mossane in 1996.
Our thoughts go out to her family and loved ones.

La Fédération panafricaine des cinéastes, présidée par l'immense Cheick Oumar Sissoko, a eu une pensée particulière pour deux réalisateurs qui ont récemment fait le grand voyage : Safi Faye et Idrissa Diabaté.
La première, Sénégalaise, est décédée à Paris, le 22 février [dans sa 80eme année]. Réalisatrice de documentaires, elle a remporté avec son deuxième long métrage, « Fad'ja », qui traite de l'opposition entre tradition et modernité, le prix George Sadoul en 1975. En 1997, elle a présenté « Mossane » au Fespaco et au Festival de Cannes, un an plus tôt.
Le second est un réalisateur ivoirien. Il s'agit d'Idrissa Diabaté, mort également à Paris, le 23 février 2023. Il a notamment realize « Murmure dans la forêt » en 2012 et « Bois sacré du professeur Aké Assi » en 2011.
The Pan-African Federation of Filmmakers, chaired by the honorable Cheick Oumar Sissoko, had a special thought for two directors who recently made the great journey: Safi Faye and Idrissa Diabaté.
The first, Senegalese, died in Paris on February 22 [in her 80th year]. A documentary filmmaker, she won the George Sadoul prize in 1975 with her second feature, "Fad'jal”, which deals with the opposition between tradition and modernity. In 1997, she presented "Mossane" at Fespaco and the Cannes Film Festival, a year earlier.
The second is an Ivorian director. This is Idrissa Diabaté, who also died in Paris on February 23, 2023. He directed "Murmure dans la forêt" in 2012 and "Bois sacré du professeur Aké Assi" in 2011.
