Fespaco 2023: Sarraounia, cinémas d’Afrique et culture de la paix | Sarraounia, representing African Cinemas and the Culture of Peace

Through the legendary figure of “Sarraounia”, the visual inscribes the three attributes of the theme of FESPACO 2023, “African Cinema and the Culture of Peace”: 

– a woman fighter, highlighting her warrior attributes at a time when the Defence and Security Forces and Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland must be brought to the fore in order to honor their sacrifice, courage and patriotic commitment.

– a woman with clenched fist, determined and committed to social change, fighting against the intolerance, social incivility, violence, insecurity and terrorism that undermine efforts for the harmonious development of our motherland and our well-being.

– a symbol of African pride, resistance and resilience, memorialized in textbooks in the African educational system.

A travers cette figure légendaire de « Sarraouinia », le visuel s’inscrit dans la dynamique du thème du FESPACO 2023 qui est « Cinéma d’Afrique et culture de la paix » en mettant l’accent sur :

– une combattante avec ses attributs de guerrière à un moment où il faut mettre en avant les Forces de Défenses et de Sécurité et les Volontaires pour la Défense de la Patrie, pour saluer leur sacrifice, leur courage et leur engagement patriotique.

– une femme au poing fermé, déterminée, engagée pour un changement social en luttant contre l’intolérance, l’incivisme, la violence, l’insécurité et le terrorisme qui minent tout effort de développement harmonieux de notre mère patrie et de notre bien-être.

“The history of this woman fascinated me. The Central African Mission led by the Colonne Voulet-Chanoine. These men did a lot of damage to Africans.  Sarraounia, voluntarily celibate, had as her sole ambition to fight and liberate her people. She refused to bow to the Colonne Voulet-Chanoine when they arrived in Niger.  She was a very brave woman.  I admired the history of Sarraounia and I also loved playing the role in the film.  I felt that I actually lived her character.

I must first take the opportunity to graciously thank Med Hondo, I owe him that.  Because every time that he speaks publicly about the film, he speaks about me, his actor.  The film has had an especially tremendous success because it was the greatest of African films in 1987.  It was awarded the Etalon de Yennenga, the prize of Air Afrique, and the prize of OAU.  It was awarded a total of five prizes. 

In Sarraounia, I played the role of a woman who had a strong character, who was afraid of nothing.  She tormented her neighbors and everybody around her.  I was very satisfied in this role.  I felt the presence of this force.”

« L'histoire de cette femme m'a fascinée. La mission centrafricaine menée par Colonne Voulet-Chanoin, ces hommes ont fait beaucoup de dégâts aux Africains. Sarraounia, célibataire volontaire, avait pour seule ambition de se battre et de libérer son peuple. Elle a refusé de s'incliner devant la Colonne Voulet-Chanoine à leur arrivée au Niger. C'était une femme très courageuse. J'ai admiré l'histoire de Sarraounia et j'ai aussi adoré jouer le rôle dans le film. Je sentais que je vivais réellement son personnage.

Je dois d’abord prendre cette occasion pour remercier gracieusement Med Hondo, je le lui dois. Parce que chaque fois qu'il parle publiquement du film, il parle de moi, son acteur. Le film a eu un succès considérable car c’était le plus grand des films africains en 1987. Il a été récompensé par l’Etalon de Yennenga, le prix Air Afrique et le prix OUA. Il a reçu un total de cinq prix.

Dans « Sarraounia », j’ai joué le rôle d’une femme forte, qui n’avait peur de rien. Elle a angoissé ses voisins et tout le monde autour d'elle. J'étais très satisfaite de ce rôle. J'ai senti la présence de cette force. »
