Pandora Hodge, the founder of Kriterion Monrovia, an NGO based in the Liberian capital Monrovia, aims to create the country’s first art-house cinema.

After suffering from two civil wars where much historical and cultural knowledge were lost, Liberia struggled to develop a vibrant film culture. After 14 years of conflict, in 2003 the country began the slow process of rebuilding and recovering. Amid this process though, the Ebola virus epidemic violently erupted within the region and severely hit Liberia. The war-torn country totalled around 4,300 deaths due to the outbreak. During this time, members of the Liberian film community stopped movie screenings and went door-to-door to help raise awareness for the virus. (Source: Wikipedia)

At the present Pandora Hodge with her team of students, and the many enthusiastic volunteers, use various venues throughout the local community for film screenings. Hence it is through cinema that Pandora Hodge hopes to bring culture back to the country after the devastation of civil war.

The initiative is based on the post-World War II project Kriterion Amsterdam, whose goal was to revitalise the cultural landscape in the Netherlands. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to raise money to make Kriterion Monrovia become a reality:

The young people of Kriterion Monrovia believe in youth entrepreneurship and culture as powerful tools for positive change. They dream of opening their own independent cinema, which will be run entirely by young Liberians. Through the cinema, they will be able to create a better future for themselves, their generation and their country.

UPDATE 7 AUGUST 2018:

The new arthouse cinema will be an independent cultural venue and hub for creativity, arts and innovation in the form of a social enterprise run entirely by Liberian university students. The European Union Delegation to Liberia chose to partner with a local student organisation Kriterion Monrovia to bring to life the dream of many young people in Liberia of having a space available where the creativity of young Liberians could be encouraged to generate new cultural and artistic products through various forms including film making, visual arts, photography and much more.
