The African Women in Cinema Blog spotlights Nneka Onuorah and her film “The Same Difference” during Women’s History Month

Nneka Onuorah of Nigerian and American parentage (her father is from Nigeria and her mother from Harlem, New York) is director of the documentary The Same Difference, recently acquired by Women Make Movies. The documentary explores lesbians who discriminate against other lesbians based on gender roles and heteronormative notions of femininity and masculinity. In an interview with Lisa Rose of the Mardi Gras Film Festival presented by Queer Screen from 18 February-3 March 2016 in Sydney, Australia where she presented her film, Nneka Onuorah stated that her objective for making the film “is to break down the policing of stereotypes and gender roles in the community… to uplift my sisters, to encourage them to be who they are and less of what others want them to be.” She further noted that social media was instrumental in her being able to enter more deeply into the conversation among black lesbians and to see who were the influencers in this dialogue and seek them out to tell their stories in the documentary. (Interview with Nneka Onuorah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpZMbYqRePo)
