Mis Me Binga 2017 : Women's cinema celebrated in Cameroon for the 8th time | Le cinéma féminin célébré pour la 8ème fois au Cameroun by/par Pélagie Ng'onana (Africiné)

[English] Français ci-après

Mis Me Binga 2017: “Women's cinema celebrated in Cameroon for the 8th time” by Pélagie Ng'onana, Africiné, 26/06/2017. Translation from French by Beti Ellerson. (An African Women in Cinema Blog/Africiné collaboration).

The International Women's Film Festival opens on 28 June in Yaoundé. For three days, the 24 films selected for this 8th edition of Mis Me Binga are presented to the public. "Three days of cinema" as it is called by the team who initiated the project in 2010, and led by filmmaker Narcisse Wandji (Walls, 2016) and producer Evodie Ngueyeli, is driven by the challenge of energising the local culture scene with the magic of cinema.

According to the organisation, this year's programming is a consistent representation of African women's production. This is certainly the case of Fruitless Tree by Aïcha Macky of Niger, the opening film. The 52-minute documentary addresses the hidden torment of women suffering from infertility. The film was in the official selection at the last Fespaco [2017], and has also won several prizes, including the Africa Movie Academy Awards for Best Documentary in 2016. The public will also be able to appreciate Cameroonian Chantal Youdom's Rêve corrompu (Corrupted Dream), El Dorado by her compatriot Agnès Yougang, Le crayon (The Pencil) by Adjaratou Ouédraogo of Burkina Faso and L’Absence by Hawa Ndiaye from Mali.

Cameroon leads the list of selected films, followed by Niger with three films and Burkina Faso with two. Mali, DRC, Côte d'Ivoire, Togo and Algeria each have one film. While the official selection covers mainly Central and West Africa, the team of Mis Me Binga is nevertheless pleased. However, this collection is far from a representation of "all the wonders of the cinemas of Africa" as this 8th edition claims. A detail that nevertheless does not undermine the importance of the event: to move the spectators, to allow them to experience a range of emotions through their encounter with recent cinematographic works. "The importance of these films and the very reason for their existence is to give them visibility, to be able to provide elements for reflection, criticism and, why not, simply for entertainment," emphasises Evodie Ngueyeli.

From its inception Mis Me Binga ("The eyes of women" in the Ewondo language of Cameroon) took on the role of advocate to promote the woman’s perspective in the universe of the 7th art. But since the last three years, the festival has opened a window to films made by men, with themes supporting the cause of women. Although ultimately, in terms of numbers, the works by men are equal to those by women. They include The Digger by Nabe Daone, Royal Team Family by Abdel Aziz Zra, both from Cameroon; Le Jardin d'Akoua (The Garden of Akoua) by Marcelin Bossou from Togo, and the Algerian Mohamed Yargui with his film Je te promets (I promise you). This year's competition includes feature films. The two juries, for feature and for short, will discern the awards for these films, which will be announced on July 1st during the closing ceremony.

Eight years later, Mis Me Binga, which ranks as the second most important festival in Cameroon (after Écrans Noirs, which takes place in July), has seen results: about 2,000 films have been screened, 10,000 visitors and 35 women trained in screenwriting, marketing and film production. This edition proposes, throughout the three days, an initiation to film animation workshop.

Annouchka de Andrade, directrice artistique - FIFAM - Amiens International Film Festival

Annouchka de Andrade, directrice artistique FIFAM - Amiens International Film Festival

The post originally published as a call for films at the FIFAM 2017, has been updated to feature the profile of artistic director Annouchka de Andrade, also the daughter of Sarah Maldoror, whose legacy she proudly upholds. (See interview with Annouckha)

Annouchka de Andrade joined the team of the Amiens International Film Festival, after working for more than 20 years in the field of visual and cinematographic arts.

She made her debut at ARP (Authors-Directors-Producers) alongside Jacques Poitrenaud under the presidency of Claude Berri by organizing the first five editions of the Beaune film meetings. During the GATS negotiations (1993) for the ARP, she was in charge of organizing conferences bringing together European decision-makers, which allowed her to participate in the debate in favor of the principle of cultural exception.

The conclusions from the debate made it possible to protect the authors from an exclusively commercial conception and to preserve for the States their sovereignty in terms of audiovisual policy. Later she was a production assistant of Jean-Pierre Ramsay, followed by a stint at Via productions, and at Mac Mahon cinema as programmer.

Her skills and her curiosity for others led her to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to Colombia as an audiovisual attaché for the Andean countries, then to Seville as director of the French Institute. In this capacity, she organized concrete, ambitious and innovative cinematographic and cultural actions, which resulted in—thanks to a close and fruitful dialogue—the signing of bilateral agreements with the CNC. And in the innovative fields of performing arts, visual arts, and language, promoting French creative industries through meetings with professionals in the cultural professions, the creation of French film festivals, support for television programs, initiatives for French music--i.e., the creation of the 1st music festival--support for the broadcasting of Radio France Internationale (RFI), promotion of video games, among others.

Cannes 2017: Rungano Nyoni's "I Am Not a Witch"

Maggie Mulubwa, in I Am Not a Witch, by Rungano Nyoni
Cannes 2017:  Rungano Nyoni's "I Am Not a Witch", a review by Olivier Barlet (Africultures)

This section about the film, I Am Not a Witch by Rungano Nyoni is part of the longer critique by Olivier Barlet. Translation from French by Beti Ellerson for the African Women in Cinema Blog. (An African Women in Cinema Blog/Africultures collaboration). Image : Africultures.

I Am Not a Witch is directed by a woman. Rungano Nyoni, who was born in Zambia and grew up in Wales, is known for her multi-awarded short films: The List, Mwansa the Great, and Listen. Shot in the vicinity of Lusaka, I Am Not a Witch is a witty jewel with an unbiased perspective, in which the nine-year-old Maggie Mulubwa imposes herself, her gaze not to be forgotten. Based on the observation that it is almost always women who are accused of sorcery and that the phenomenon is found in different places in Africa, Rungano Nyoni spent a month in Ghana in a two-hundred-year-old "witch camp". This experience allowed her to observe the organisation and patterns as well as the conditions in which the women worked and to visualise the scenario of the film, which she developed at the Cinéfondation du Festival de Cannes in 2013 and then in 2014 at the Moulin d'Ande.

It begins with tourists on a bus who, in the winter of the Four Seasons of Vivaldi, go to see, as in a zoo, a community of witches—made-up and even ludicrously menacing. Hence, the film will tell us about prejudices and in so doing is not afraid to diverge. The witches all have a white ribbon attached to their backs preventing them from flying away, as this is the manner in which they could kill people. Cutting these ribbons would transform them into goats. In the village, the nine-year-old Shula is regarded as a witch, such that she is ultimately incorporated into this community.

She stands out from the rest by the acuity of her judgment in naming those guilty of theft, to the extent that the chief commissioner designates her as assistant. So off we go through a series of fantastical scenes, extremely funny and absolutely allegorical, since throughout the film, it is the condition of women that is evoked: these witches exploited and uneducated, are prodded to buy wigs; they gulp down gin during an inspection by a government representative, the extravagant televisual trickery drives the commissioner's wife to renounce her identity. All of this is based on ancestral beliefs: one summons to make it rain, one skins a chicken, etc. Emancipation strategies are outlined, as in the tale that Shula relates where the ruse inverts the exploitative relationship, and of course, in the finale of this flamboyant film.
